as i said i wish they would just go full pop. they do that so well. but then it's like "here's a random time signature change" and it goes off the rails a little bit

I am almost shocked with how uninteresting I am finding this so far. I hope this is a grower.

Shocked, I say.

I don't like this feeling, Calc. It's no good.

I don't know what it is I don't like yet. It was kind of a chore to listen to it straight through in my car for the last couple days. It's almost like they lost the thing that made them so interesting for the last three albums.

This is growing on me. Peak and Valley Lines is blowing me away. The lyrics are getting better. I think the only real weakness is the production. It's missing some of the clarity -- and it's a bit less technically demanding than previous albums, at least on first glance.

These guys are basically good for a 4 every time.

Technically proficient Portland act Icarus The Owl continue to refine their distinctive sound on 4th LP 'Pilot Waves'. Reverting back to producer Stephan Hawkes, the quartet rein in their quirky time signatures a little, if far from eradicating the intricate melodic hooks. Joey Rubenstein continues to improve as a vocalist, pulling off some seriously soaring choruses here, while the superb rhythm section is ever-present. The result is that this is undoubtedly their tightest (at 40 minutes) record yet, and somehow their most diverse! Basically, these are 10 well-crafted tunes. Recommended Tracks: Skysweeper, I Am the Delorean, Prague 1842 & The Mad Machine.

Honestly thought and feared that this album would grow off me. Its even better than before. Hearing things you haven't heard is such a treat.

Yup. First listen in a while. Forgot how good it was.

It's criminal how few people know about these guys. I've been listening constantly since 'Love Always, Leviathan', and continue to wonder why I hear so little of them. I found them from the featured Sputnik review, and have only ever seen news regarding them on this site.

Is it their marketing? Their manager? What could it be? I couldn't even find any of this album on YouTube last night when I felt like sharing it.

I finally went through their earlier stuff and I've listened to all of their discography. I almost feel like I prefer The Spotless Mind to everything that came after

Love Always has been my favorite of theirs, then pilot waves, then self titled

now I would put spotless mind on par or above love always. there are some amazing songs on there

Blue Swan is obviously cool for them but I can't wait til they get to something bigger because out of all of the under-known bands I know, I'd say these guys deserve the most exposure

And my ranking goes Self-Titled, Pilot Waves, LAL, then Spotless Mind. I think if Spotless Mind was trimmed a bit, it would have a chance at beating LAL, but still LAL has much more polish. Still, definitely can't deny the 2000's pop punk charm of TSM. I love this band.

Yeah Spotless Mind is a big album and as a whole it is probably dragged down a little bit by it's length but I still don't find myself outright skipping songs so at least there is that. Love Always would probably be considered a "better" and more coherent album as a whole, even though I am torn between the two

Yeah, I feel that. LAL probably wins it for me because of the flawless title track.
