It took me a while because when I decided to give them a good try, I got stuck on "Drunkship of Lanterns" for a while and thought, hm I should probably check out the rest of the album. Then I did and it blew my tits off. Frances was the opposite, when I finally gave it a real go I immediately thought "oh damn" the whole way through.

lucky me, had my first listen not a long time ago and can confirm it's absolutely on pair with modern prog, it's not just the sentiment you're feeling
Smashing Cicatriz Esp rn and still in awe of the instrumental part. Yeah, the vocs guy in awe of instrumental, that's how crazy it gets

A little pretentious, but still damn good music.

A good sound but really gets stomped in comparison to their next album.
The vocals lack all of the visceral grandiose pomposity they would later showcase on their next album and all of the sentimental savagery of At The Drive-In.
In terms of technical proficiency Omar's frenzied guitar feels completely restrained, this along with the evolving vocals make the neurosis minimal.
You'd be better off listening to the much bolder Frances the Mute.

The girl I was hanging out this year said that she LOVED mars volta but HATED at the drive-in. I took it as an offense, but I didn't tell her anything, either.

In my view Frances the Mute is so over the top that it loses its focus, especially Cassandra Gemini, I much prefer this one.

I love the first three tracks to FTM, but I have to put this higher too. So many hooks, and Jon's drumming.

You know something, Source, I care. As a man I've met once, Geoff Rickley, says: this is serious business.
