That's my point, they're mainstream but they do have more heart than most artists on the radio these days.

My problem with Fairly Local was that it was obviously pandering to the fans of the group by making them all feel exclusive as the "skeleton clique." twenty one pilots are a duo with videos that have 20+ million views and are on a label that hosts Panic At the Disco, Paramore, the dude from Fun, and other big name acts.

They aren't some little unknown indie band anymore.

I don't mind a little chip on the shoulder, but some of this just comes across as too pretentious to me.

Is the argument being made that mainstream music can't be sincere? No argument here that they're a well known band, but that was never what I was debating.

Heard about half this album (Stressed Out, Ride, Fairly Local, Lane Boy, We Don't Believe, Message Man, and Goner) last night at a party. Solid stuff

i wouldn't call em pretentious, well actually have you seen that profile description? but what they do is so confusing. it's like they want to be considered weird and unique yet they try so hard to be extremely accessible at the same time. constant references and slights to mainstream music, yet they produce their music in a similarly high end loud fashion and sounds. "we don't like you guys but we want to be in on it."

basically they holding their own selves back. they could easily drop the gimmicks become a highly successful mainstream pop band, or they could go way left field and actually make something interesting/unique out of their hybridization of sounds. but they insist on being this slightly quirky and completely unmarketable not-so-weirdos, yet feel burned by their lack of mainstream acceptance and are embittered by it.

My biggest gripe with them is how they write songs based on really basic concepts, things like how happiness isn't a constant or romanacizing and coping with mental illnesses, but act like they are tackling deep and taboo subject matters. I mean these are things I thought about in my highschool social studies classes when I was day dreaming, not when I'm sitting down to delve deep into my psyche like Tyler Joseph claims to do through his music

I might just be picking up on vibes that aren't there, but they seem to have this really basic tumblr bitch style going on
