Review Summary: Dick's Picks Volume 22 is a high energy "68" show that needs to be heard. The caveat on the album says that it has tape hiss and low vocals. However, if it is there I can not tell. Not that it would matter, the show is an absolutely killer. Dick's Picks volume 22 was recorded on February 23-24 at the King's Beach Bowl in Lake Tahoe. This is the earliest dated show that was picked for the fantastic series of concerts. Man did they get it right when picking this show. The Dead are hot right out of the gate with a killer 19 minute version of Viola Lee Blues; which they quit playing in less than a year when they extended their new songs Dark Star and The Other One. 1968 is prime Pigpen territory and he belts out a great version of Hurts Me too next. Then the band really turns it on with and extended jam that covers a short Dark star into China Cat Sunflower into an explosive The Eleven, ending with a frantic Turn On Your Lovelight. This would usually end the set, but the Dead are hot to trot and finish it off with Bob Weir's Born Crossed Eyed into a cool Spanish Jam ending disc one. This disc alone would make disc worth checking out, but there is still another swinging disc.
Disc 2 starts with a great early Morning Dew. They then again turn it over again to Pigpen with his classic Good Morning Little School Girl. They then perform a concise complete run through of That's It for the Other One, about the length of the album version, into New Potato Caboose. The band then sets in for the long haul first with a swinging Alligator into another China Cat, into another Eleven, back into Alligator, into Caution, and ending with a ear splitting Feedback. This 30 plus minute jam has the listener at the edge of their seat and needing to catch their breath at the end.
The jamming throughout this release is to say the least explosive. This is the Dead at their early exciting best, not the mid-eighties sleepy noodling version. They are starting to expand their jamming and you will hear the evolution of future classics in their infancy here. This does not mean they are bad, on the contrary, it is refreshing to hear them before they have been played 500 times, and the band shows their excitement for new material through their intensity. I highly recommend this release for any music lover.

this is one of the best Dick's Picks by the way. don't expect much love on here for the Dead, "jam" bands are relatively frowned upon although I wouldn't really call GD a jam band

Oh, ya they are not a jam band they are THE jam band. I'll check it out Pissbore ,very openminded also love prog, psych, doom, early glam, jazz, and metal

that is the date of the show, thought it was more pertinent than date it was officially released, as it has been circulating through boots for decades

Happy 3/1 people; a great anniversary for The Dead, on this date back in "69" they played what is thought by many to be the ultimate show, If you get the chance listen to it, it will blow your mind. You can find the whole show on Fillmore West 1969:the Complete recordings

just preordered the 4 Dave's picks releases scheduled for 2017, the first release volume 21 is a show from 73 at the Boston GArden, a great venue for the dead, as they played many great shows their including Dicks picks 31 from 91; the rest are up in the air as of now
It is a little gimmicky to make people order the whole year, but am tired of missing them completely due to a 16500 printing that sell out in less than 24 hours I will get back as to the greatness of the picks for the year, and hope to make myself review at least one of them.

I also loaded a few more albums for them, go scope them out and rate or check them out

Great review! I'm fairly new here but I've added a lot in the last couple of weeks. Most of it is up and I'll probably finish the few missing bits soon. There are still a couple of bonus discs, record store releases and two box sets that I haven't done yet.

Gonna have to check this one out soon. Not a fan of China Cat Subflower, but the rest of the setlists looks great

china cat blends in during the extended jam, earlier versions are a little rougher, it has over the years grown on me as a song, especially when it does not stand alone
