To me, this is a modern classic, and a D'Angelo-like statement that has more potential to reach the mainstream than the aforementioned. This will be one of the most important albums of the year for sure.
My thoughts exactly... Black Messiah was the first comparison I thought of, but since Kendrick is much more relevant to modern culture than D'Angelo who was gone for 15 years, this album will probably have a bigger impact.

I'm nearly finished with my second listen to this and two things I can say I'm glad about is that he managed to 1. make an album that is good and 2. somehow fit in i in a way that it actually fits and isn't a huge distraction

I just quoted the author of the review, and I was more agreeing with the Black Messiah comparison than the "modern classic" part... I obviously don't know how well this will hold up but all I know is I'm enjoying it a ton right now.

Really liking this but it sounds a lot more cold and calculated compared to his older albums. It's like he's worrying so much about what he's saying and how he's saying it that the genuine emotion isn't there so much. But i dunno maybe i just gotta give it a few more spins!!!

Yeah, this needs time to simmer and sink in before it can be deemed a classic. Hold onto your hype people, getting carried away.

treeqt i'm saying that even a big fan of kendrick can't call this a modern classic because it hasn't had enough time to set in yet. was that honestly too much for you to comprehend?

also pots is always right but at the same time why are you so afraid to just enjoy something if you do enjoy it?

I was saying I couldn't sense as much genuine emotion on this as on some of his older projects but really I think that could just be the fact that this is a more grown up and mature Kendrick than ever before. Also, the album is just so dense as a whole.
It's just different, and I'm glad that this is what he's come back with after all the fame and glory. It could've been a lot worse (and I'm definitely liking it more than GKMC).

He sounds angry on "King Kunta" and "The Blacker The Berry", something Kendrick hasn't really shown before this record. It's appropriate given the general themes presented.
|
| |
I think it's more that feeling of youthfulness that's absent here, and that could actually end up making me like this more than those other projects I've mentioned overall. The man sounds a lot more sure of himself and the opinions he's putting out on here, and it works to his advantage

agree with this, however, im still hesitant to call something a 'modern classic' given solely 8 hours of context haha. love it all you wish but for me the term 'classic' implies a certain level of influence that can't really be observed in such a short period of time.
guess its a semantics thing really.
