This is a feat that few bands (especially many great ones) fail to pull off with success.
I think you need to reword that.
Personally, I thought this album stank. And I really wanted to like it. Really! I haven't liked anything from these guys since '96. To me, Pearl Jam only have 3 good albums (Ten, Vs and Vitalogy). I thought Yeild didn't do as the title suggests. I didn't mind Last Kiss, but don't think it's great by any standard. I'd put it in my "OK B Sides" pile.
I'm sorry, but I just think this album dissappointed on many fronts. In an effort to seem cool and relevant, they're ambiguous and unrevolutionary. I also think that musically, the album is about a 1/10 from musicians who aren't fantastic (let's face it) but who are more than capable of 7 or 8/10.

Of course Vs. and Ten are better, but in an age of crap music, this is an excellent album. Pearl Jam is at their best when their pissed at something. This time it looks like Bush.

Definitely not Pearl Jam's best, but it's growing on me. I like it a lot right now, Life Wasted is one of my favorites. I prefer No Code to this however.

I really, REALLY like this album. I wasn't sure whether to buy it or not, because we had people (mainly rock critics) praising the album for its return to hard rock, but then we had people (on this site) who didn't seem to be impressed. I decided to buy it off of Amazon, and I'm glad I did. Every track is great. Only reason I didn't give it a five was that it doesn't FEEL like a five-star album. And five-star albums only come every once in a blue moon. But Life Wasted (great riff), WWS, Severed Hand, Gone, Army Reserve, and the epic Inside Job are simply CLASSIC. It's just always been easy for me to get into Pearl Jam's music.

I like to think of Ten as the alternative to Nevermind. Never did like that record.

Very good album.
During their career PJ have been swinging between more straightforward/accessible (Ten, Yield and this one) and more experimental albums (No code, Binaural, Riot act), I think this one is at least as good as Ten, and certainly better than Yield.
My favorites here: WWS, Severed hand, Gone, Come back and Inside job.

But will this be the album that finally gets me into Pearl Jam? Because I've been trying for like 19 years.

Ten is great.
People that don't get into them try Rearviewmirror and see what you like from that.
