I never really noticed anything like that, but I do agree that this band isn't really the most technical. They're more about atmosphere, heaviness and emotion.

the drums are also off, a lot, but they were played by John.. that being said I really do love this album as it got me into Agalloch.

Yeah, he was the drummer through Ashes and he got better each album. Dekker isn't the tightest drummer either (especially live, but bad monitors could be to blame on their DVD; even Dan Zimmerman screwed up because of that), but he gets the job done.

Sweet that just earned John so much more respect. His drumming was really solid on TM. Only thing is, if he truly wasn't happy with Ashes then why did he allow for it to be released?

Isis wasn't quite satisfied with how Absence turned out either. I interviewed Andi Deris last year and he summed it up pretty perfectly, though: "Honestly, you're never finished...you just hand it in. You could turn the knobs forever and not be satisfied."

i'm definitely finding more to like. for the longest time i really didn't like the mantle and then one day shortly after my nana's passing i remember it was raining out and i threw it on and it just floored me. sometimes these albums take time - lots of time.

As Embers Dress The Sky is probably their best nonheavy moment

Been listening to this a lot lately and it's still awesome, but some of the riffs in the middle of the album are too similar and sound a tad recycled.

This is honestly one of my all time favorite metal albums at this point. There's no wasted moments, and all the clean and acoustic guitar parts are incredible.

I loved bands like Opeth, Black Sabbath, Swallow The Sun, Anathema etc. growing up more than black metal, so maybe Agalloch's first three speaks more to that side of me.

I dont see the link. The first 3 still have quite a bit of bm influence, especially this.

Most of it doesn't play out like Bm though

Marrow, Faustian Echoes, and Serpent have little to no clean vocals and way more blast beats and tremolo guitar picking than the first three.
