I'm hellbent on getting this album...

I've been wanting to check out all these old school Post Hardcore bands like Fugazi, Quicksand, Refused seeing as I'm such a massive fan of At the Drive In

I don't like this review very much. But then when your dealing wtih my favourite album and band, I suppose I'am going to be hard nosed.

for a start:

"The band originated from Sweden and though they did create a new sound, they never really had a full life with only 2 CD’s and a DVD."

Incorrect. They had three albums and many many e.p's. hence why they can now be found on two large compilation discs.

"This one is more about post-hardcore while the one before this was a raw hardcore album. "

No. A raw hardcore album is something like "It all comes down to this" by Bane. 'Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent' is just as much of a crossover album as 'The Shape of Punk to Come', but it deals with all the influences they grew up with, rather than expanding out to, essentially every noteable music genre ever made.

'Songs...' has Hardcore elements yes, but if anything I'd say it's one of the first Metalcore albums. It was one of the first albums to take the breakdowns and punk attitude of hardcore music and collide it with Slayer-esque riifs.

I dunno. It just seems a very basic and biased understanding, Im guessing you've only been into this album a year or so?

To me, this review is as "opinionated" as you claim the album to be.

Also, I don't agree with your opinions on the instruments.

For a start, you've shown that you're knowledge of drumming must be limited; David Sandstrom is one of the best in the last ten or so years. The hypnotic rhythms and fills he comes up with are the backbone to Refused sound. It's in Sandstrom's drumming that determines the mood of the piece; In 'The Deadly Rhythm' he uses fast Jazz drumming to, not only show the Jazz influence outside of samples, but also to indicate the fast paced-punk feel to that song. Or in another example, in 'Protest Song 68' Not only is that drum beat just sublime but it creates an actually frightening tension to make that song stand out since, it's so "stop start"

As for the guitars, for them to have gone OTT would have been foolish and would have ruined this album. The guitar's are very dependent on whatever music genre they are paying homage to, so you can't really judge them on this album other than that they are always at least interesting.

Besides, they didn;t need to prove themselves, the sheer breakneck speed they play on "Songs to Fan the Flames of Discontent" is enough proof of what good guitarists/writers they are.

One of my favorite albums of all time. Every song is enjoyable to me, as well as Dennis Lyxzen's (sp?) lyrics are amazing.

Pretty sweet album. Dennis is the man.

"New Noise" sounds like one of those songs that's been ruined by being on an overplayed beer commercial.

I don't have much to say on this album so I'll just repeat everyone else and say good review/album/band.

Didn't like this album at first, but it REALLY grew on me.

New noise is the best track I feel, unfortunately there aren't any other songs that follow the same trend.

New Noise, Summerholidays and the Deadly Rhythm are my high points.

I was in love with this album when I first heard it. Then I kept listening (not obsessively, just how I always do)...and it just got worse and worse every time. Now the only song I can really stand listening to in its entirety is "Refused Are F****ing Dead".

*yawn*

Unpopular as the opinion may be, I still insist that this is possibly THE most overrated hardcore album of all-time. Which I guess is saying soemthing, considering I actually like this...

I'm going to have to agree with Justanothernimrod on just about every point he made. Not really a fan of this review, far too many errors in terms of facts. The drumming is some of the most amazing, ridiculous, mind-boggingly raw/perfect/timed-to-a-tee drumming I think there has ever been. And the guitars are absolutely spot on on every song, they're doing exactly what needs to be done, as opposed to ruining them by going over-board. Although I will have to disagree about the Metalcore comment directed at "Songs To Fan The Flames..." while I would agree there are certain elements of metalcore to it, I would still call it a Hardcore album. Anyway, one of the most important punk albums of all time, and the best album of the 90's.This Message Edited On 08.04.06

I said about Siamese Dream by the Smashing Pumpkins being my favourite ever album, but this is in my top 10. Everyone loves New Noise and I am no exception, but the title track and Summerholidaysvspunkroutine are also amazing. Oh and did anyone spot the rip off from Lostprophets with "Rooftops (Liberation Transmission)"?

Yeah, to be honest, I'm revising my statement about songs to fan the flames. I've had better "genre tutoring" as it were and now I'd deftinitely say it's a "metal influenced, hardcore" album.

The whole album is perfect, picking a favourite is near impossible, but for me, I think its still "Worms of the Senses/Faculties of the Skull" just because it's one of those "epic, passionate" hardcore songs that the likes of Modern Life is War now bang out without breaking a sweat.

I listend to these guys quite some time ago and didn't enjoy it that much. Then I heard this awesome song when I was watching Friday Night Lights a few days ago. I was curious who it was, but put it out of my mind. I go to the listening party for them out of curiosity...and I'll be damned, that awesome song was New Noise.

True Story.
