I really didn't like "Shake It Off." Is it safe to say I probably won't like this album? Will give some of the noted tracks a listen but I don't have my hopes up

I hated Shake It Off at first, but this album is nothing like that track (for the most part). Besides, I ended up coming around to S.I.O.

If I listen to this, it will be the first Swift album I have ever heard

You should listen to this Dev, I could totally see you digging this more than her other stuff. With that said, there's no way in hell your enthusiasm for it will even begin approach mine.

You probably won't, for better or worse!

My only regret is not buying the deluxe CD. I couldn't find it so I settled for the normal version.

Alright, New Romantics it is! I'll listen to the whole thing eventually, but at least for a sampling that should be a good start. Good to hear Shake It Off grew on you, SS. I thought "We Are Never..." was horrible but I came around on it, so maybe the same will happen to SIO

yep, this is really nice

New Romantics has a Lorde/CHVRCHES vibe going on and is one of the coolest tracks. Very straightforward but cool. All in all I think the easy (lazy) comparisons with those two artists (and Del Rey) really demonstrate what this is: a contemporary pop album which aligns itself with the best examples in the genre

Oh, and I liked Shake It Off, and its okay as the funny oddball of the album

This is really terrible at first listen. Don't give me this fucking '80s crap, I want sleek, modern pop songs. Red was miles better than this.

I assumed it'd be pirateable or something. I obviously do not have the deluxe copy lol, is there really no file floating around the internet somewhere?

Throwback '80s stuff, mixed with generic R&B influences. See for example FKA Twigs' superb debut from earlier this year, how this kind of thing should be done nowadays. This just is a slog.

For all the slack she's received for them, I was very impressed by Red's selection of singles, which at least instrumentally sounded very mature and balanced.

honestly only the first half of this has significant throwback vibes, pretty much everything past shake it off, including the bonus tracks, are very contemporary.

Everything is throwback though, there's no such thing as brand new music that doesn't borrow something. Honestly I don't hear the heavy 80's influence, to me it sounds way more like contemporary pop artists than it does anything from previous decades.

I didn't mind Red though (I know my scathing review indicates otherwise), and I agree that the singles were all good choices with a balanced sound. (Well, besides 22...the verse just straight up rips off of P!nk)

Honestly I don't hear the heavy 80's influence,

I'll admit, it's mostly the bombastic, heavy synth-laden sound I so despise, that's again bothering me so much. It sounds pretty cookie-cutter to me as well, very unpersonal. Idk, maybe I'll loosen to it, but I'm really not impressed by this. But I'll quit yapping. :]

It's definitely bombastic and synth-laden, so if that's not you're cup of tea then I completely understand your disdain for this. And yeah it's cookie-cutter to an extent, you'll get no argument from me on that - although I think she manages to inject more personality into this record than most pop artists nowadays can manage. I hope you loosen to it too but if not all it means is that this isn't your style, which is perfectly fine lol.

The music can be the best thing ever, but if her lyrics are the same whiny shit as always I'll probably hate it.
