Arcade1996... well i guess that explains this:

just another metalcore release made significant by the name on the jewel case

lmao rofl

A continuous staple of their live shows, "Unholy Confessions" may be a relic of faux-emo inflected metalcore that plagued post-Jane Doe '00s, but it remains a recognizable bridge in Avenged Sevenfold's journey to headliner status.

please forgive my condescension (which you are justified to take issue with) but i find the following very very funny (non-exhaustive list):

-reference to an earlier analysis of the "subtext" of sevenfold's recent album (Indeed, Christgau this is not)

-not one but two (2!) references to converge (three if you count the recommended albums)

-(in summation: examining a band's album through the lens of someone who appears to have devoted a lot of listens to the albums that have followed it and, in large part, attempted to replicate what made it resonate with fans in the first place*)

*asterisk to note the following

-I do not consider city of evil to fit into this category

-I am not particularly protective of this album (it's one of my fav sputnik list lowest common denominator punchlines, and it's definitely a 5, but i get where it's weaknesses lie and you do a fine job of pointing them out... albeit by doing so in the context of some superfluous 'journey' to 'headliner status' that is (sorry about this) pretty funny to me)

"Tracks such as "Second Heartbeat" and "I Won't See You Tonight, part 1" become ponderous exercises in breakdown-paced screamathons with little in the way of a discernible tune to hold onto."

Did you even listen to the album?

Known nowadays largely for ignoring the material of their first 2 albums (the band have refused to play any songs from Sounding the Seventh Trumpet for some time now), it seems only through nostalgia for the now deceased James 'the Rev' Sullivan that they've bothered to look into their bridging piece, and to some their best, Waking the Fallen.

also this isn't that important or relevant but:

when i saw them (um... 7 years ago?) they played plenty of WTF and no Seventh Trumpet. This might not be relevant (since it was so many albums ago) but i always just assumed they didnt play Seventh Trumpet because it wasn't very well-liked and because synyster gates wasnt in the band when they wrote it. again totally unverified but idk

M. Shadows doesn't sound like Axl here at all. Yes, on later albums, but on this, definitely not.

He had the same vocal coach as Axl Rose for City Of Evil but sounded completely "Axl-Free" here.

Converge is hardly metalcore.

fair enough, i'm not amazingly well versed in metalcore so it does show, but I do think that Converge are a benchmark in terms of popularizing the genre and so references to them becomes something of a fail safe for me. I also didn't realize that referencing one of my earlier reviews was off limit or read unprofessionally but i felt like popping it in there. If it does read strangely then I'll take it out, but I have done it in earlier reviews.

ok here are a few things (and please note i don't think the review was THAT bad but):

- if you are analyzing a piece (of *anything*) and someone suggests a flaw in your analysis (or a mistaken approach) you can't (or shouldn't) defend yourself by confessing that you're not 'amazingly well versed' .... i mean if it comes to this, ask yourself why you are putting your words out there in the first place

-Converge are a very well-regarded hardcore/metalcore band but should be held very far away from any discussion about 'popularizing the genre' (the obvious reason for this is that Converge doesn't tour arenas and has never cracked the Billboard 69)

-referencing early reviews is fine (and even encouraged, at least by me). It's the breaking down an album like Hail to the King to the degree where you are purporting to discuss the albums subtext that i find pretty funny. i have lol'd at people doing this thing facetiously in the past and have done it myself... i dig shitty music too dude, it's my fav. and if you can pull that kind of analysis off in a way that people like reading it, then more power to you... (i haven't read your HTTK review but i might at some point).

-i typically use failsafe as one word but spellcheck tells me i'm wrong. i think it should be hyphenated "fail-safe."

-with rare exceptions, please put your periods and commas "inside quotes."
