Actually this is a 1.5. I dig the attitude. Everything else I hate

Yeah, art is for the people and not commodification! And you hate all the best things, Reef. Or like you like some of them but all of it usually has to be tidy and safe and inoffensive, with the odd outlier like Beefheart. It can never be too new either lol.

I don't feel like that's a fair criticism. First of all, I like what I like. i can't change that and second of all, I don't like to get into dick measuring contests by bragging about how much "offensive" or "challenging" music I like. When it comes to dissonance and atonality, I like it in small doses when it's used in the right places. Beefheart or Sun Ra manage to walk that tight rope for me a lot. This does not.

Is this as good as Glenn Branca tho?
Seriously can one safely listen to this having only heard ‘A Love Supreme’ or would I be better off checking some of his other material first?
Digging: Sed Non Satiata - Le Ciel De Notre Enfance |

Check his other stuff first, and yes it's better than Glenn Branca.
Digging: DJ Assault - Jungle Love |

Yeah check his other stuff first Demon. Especially My Favourite Things 💚☘️💚
This is lovely and legendary and super intense and alive but it's more of a possible end point instead of a good second experience with Coltrane.

Indeed, both are hard 5's. We're all brothers in dissonance! I feel like both are to be enjoyed if you like heavy or weird shit.

No, you can't safely listen to this If u have no idea about Coltranes evolution towards free jazz.
You have to start in the late 50s and slowly work your way forward in Coltranes Discog to be able to classify Ascension musically as well as spiritually.
Starting with Ascension would be the same as if you wanted to dive deeper into European movies and immediately start with 'Ex drummer' (for me the cinematic equivalent to Ascension).

Ex Drummer's really what you're going with for the analogy?

Yes, love them both so much but both are hard to enjoy.
For me Ex Drummer is a classic lol

I just mean talking about the cosmic spirituality of this, something as ultimately nihilistic as Ex Drummer feels like a strange comparison lmao (like the capstone course on something that started with Noe's filmog)
My mind, something more existentially surreal and unknowable rather than outright bleak feels better suited, Muriel Time of the Return, Eden and After, Marketa Lazarova (guess that one's still pretty damn bleak lol) reads a closer parallel to my eyes, if you're sticking with European flicks

Although comparing a work so steeped in the experience of black spiritualism to a pretty much universally white film canon is a strange comparison in the first place, so w/e works

Fair points.
Will check them out.
Comparsion is based on my personal preference.

Idk, I was already into harsh music so I got into Coltrane’s wild shit and went backwards. Everyone has an individual experience with art. For me, it isn’t remotely hard to enjoy.
