The term "soulless wank" gets tossed around a lot when talking about prog but that really is how I'd describe this band's approach to soloing.

Yeah As I Am and Stream of Consciousness have decent solos but otherwise they blow on this one

One or two retarded solos, but a hell of a lot of meaty jams m/

Closer here is really good.

Always preferred melodic DT though, I feel their weakness is when they try to go heavy and overly complicate songs for no reason.

"overly complicate songs for no reason"

isn't that, uh, every dream theater song?

To dream theater:

Doing a simple task in an overly complicated way.

To Lars Ulrich:

Trying to do a simple task while failing repeatedly.

It seems Avenged Sevenfold took a lot of inspiration from this album. City of Evil specifically.

I love wank so I can't really complain about most of this. Not a big fan of honour thy father tbh and most of endless sacrifice, and the 'rapping' on this dying soul, but the musicianship is tight

A lot of the songs on here could've been shortened by like 4 minutes and it would've made it a lot better

How can anyone hear Stream of Consciousness/In the Name of God back to back and give this anything less than a 3.5

I couldn't tbh. Stream of Consciousness is a 5/5 easily

prog metal like this gets the unfortunate flak of being 'musicians' music (music that musicians wanna learn and play) and it kind of shows here considering how a lot of these songs could be considered long etudes for excessive soloing in phyrgian/phrygian dominant (in the name of god, this dying soul etc.)

An amazing album. My personal favorite, the direction that Dream Theater tool with this album is insane, there are truly impossible songs like In the Name of God and This Dying Soul that take the virtuoso therm into another level, all instruments are played in a very precise and perfect way and any Dream Theater fan has to admit that this album is a true classic that deserves it's place on the history of modern music.

No millennial artist can match this 7 piece album.

* Best songs: In the name of God, Vacant/Stream of Consciousness (Always in that order), Endless Sacrifice, This Dying soul

*Average song: As I am

As I Am is kinda weak as an opener, yea. Amazing album nevertheless
