I don't know if it works that way with musicians. I think every artist truly believes that their most recent work is their best, even if the fans and critics disagree.
Unlike say, professional sports, your artistic sensibilities do grow and evolve as you get older. So even if other people don't appreciate your art as you get older you'll still know that you're a better and more mature musician at 40 than you were at 20.

Some musicians get older and wisen up to the realization they peaked 20 years ago too tho. Like a lot of artists just do shows to pay bills as the primary source of income and do albums cause their record labels want it.

I can understand artists being reluctant to play shows because touring and performing is extremely stressful but also necessary to pay the bills. But I think it's extremely rare for them to mail in entire albums when that process of creation takes up so much time, effort and money and there's so little direct payoff from making albums in this day and age. Yeah, in some cases they might do it just to get out of a record label contract but those are the exceptions to the rule.
