@Green Baron
It's your call, man, but I thought that song was boring. Even "God, Drugs and Sex" had more going on than that song.
@toxin.
It really depends on the song, I'd say. "Little Tyrants", "Godspeed" and "The Resistance" have some incredible lyrics. It's when Christian starts getting into the adolescent romance stuff that it gets rough, like "Breaking" and "Art of War" like you mentioned.

god, drugs, and sex was a pretty good song though, it just isn't an immediate one, which is unusual for anberlin
and yeah, i'd agree that in general, when they start talking about romance, they get rather cheesy. still not really sure why they have that stuff, since i'm sure the band is well aware of how juvenile they are

I actually like Harbinger, but yeah it shouldn't have been the closing song.

and ha, dissenter is my clear un-favorite. it's not as bad as i thought when i listened to it first, but that bridge is totally wasted. ugh

I loved at first.

I was a bit disappointed with this album on first listen as well, but it is growing on me. I knew after the first few songs this would be more of a mix of Vital and Dark is the way with a more calm approach and less energy than their past releases. I still enjoy pretty much every song other than "Birds of Prey" and the extremely disappointing "Harbinger" but even still they aren't bad. "We Are Destroyer", "Atonement", "Losing it All", and "Hearing Voices" are all extremely great though.
Overall, I think this album is great but jut seems fairly average for Anberlin. I can't help but think that they could have created another masterpiece and even topped Cities but instead ended up playing it safe. The lyrics are some of their best though as Sowing mentioned which is a major positive. Probably a 3.5/4 but it could probably grow with repeat listens.

^eh i think my ratings were just inflated a bit. still love anberlin as much as i did, just penalizing a bit more on the meh songs that are really prevalent in the bottom 3

oh I see. I think I'm going in the opposite direction. Songs off New Surrender that I didn't accept I'm now thinking they are better than the best songs off Cities and Vital. Such as Burn Out Brighter Young Life Breaking
I thought Stephen said he could never write another love song after that one song on Dark is the Way?????!!!!

ah really? yeah some songs take a bit to grow, but stuff like burn out brighter, young life, and blame me! blame me! just topped out at meh for me. i mean i've probably listened to that album enough that the album has grown as much as it possibly could
but i also haven't been jamming too much anberlin in the last year, been listening mainly to classical / soundtrack / other piano music instead, so maybe it's just because i haven't listened to most of anberlin's albums in a while
