That shift from the guts and fire John Henry to the soft Hold On Magnolia is absolutely, utterly magnificent.
If you've got the time, I wholeheartedly recommend the 2003 Live in Granada show. Most, if not all of it is on YouTube and it's Molina at his most wonderful, arguably: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmUBSNbb7Nc (Almost Was Good Enough)

Hold On Magnolia was the first ever Molina song I heard. Captivated ever since.

What an absolute fucking classic this is.

I love how he goes two songs in a row on here where he isn't on them and then comes back with the epic John Henry Split My Heart.
When he says "stood on the 66 highway" and that guitar comes in! Wooooooweeee what an artist

Been a minute since I jammed this. Threw it on randomly last night in bed and ended up listening to the entire thing. Thinking it might deserve a score bump. 4.0 seems too low.

Had this on repeat all January, fucking heartbreaking that Molina's addiction got the better of him after this. One of the best records by anyone ever

Calling back to ya post last July tho Luc, Hold on Magnolia is as reliable a tearjerker as they come. Even given how consistent and prolific he was, still can't believe all these songs came out during the same sessions, while stepping so far outside his comfort zone at the time

Oh yes, one of the best songs ever penned. Well said. "The Old Black Hen" is another godly tune that represents everything country music should be.
