The black metal elements of the bands are fairly similar. It's just that deafheaven are clean and indulge more in post-rock/shoegaze, whereas 'Monolith are dirty and crusty. The guitar lines are fairly similar, I think.

i agree with artuma zaru, i feel like the only comparason you can draw from this is that they shared one band member once and that they are both black metal influenced (and dfhvn isnt even that black metal) i would much rather compare it to Black Breath's Razor to Oblivion

What did it used to mean? The ways I saw it thrown around were to describe:



black metal with post-rock influences

black metal with post-rock and other influences like shoegaze, ambient, indie, whatever (blackgaze?)

"modern"-sounding black metal with clean production and often less reliance on blasts (Wildernessking, Chrome Waves).
