i liked this album too, it just felt kinda like them not giving a fuck and tossing off an album in the studio, which hey! is actually pretty great and entertaining but it loses its appeal after a few spins. pearly gates tho that song kills

The reason people have distrust with this new material is because they started out so aggressive and energetic. Everything after Leave Home has definitely been a regression of that idea, which doesn't necessarily make it bad, but naturally people become offended by this because punk ideology is so specific and concrete to a singular definition of anti-establishment, free thought, and individualism that when a band like this abandon their original values and change to a style that leans more to rock's conventional past, people get upset and dismiss this new material.

well put. altho people do the exact same thing in the opposite case too where a band does stick to what they do best for too long...

he provides thoughtful and articulate points while you provide no insights whatsoever so you might want to reconsider who looks dumb tbh

"altho people do the exact same thing in the opposite case too where a band does stick to what they do best for too long..."

Right, which is why punk is generally applauded in short bursts. There are exceptions to this idea of course, but in the realm of punk music, bands that release a minimal amount of material are typically better received in the present and more revered in the future, because its easier to evaluate, allows them to not grow as a band and face the possibly of negative reception that would leave a dent in their name, and being so firmly aggressive and extreme in general can easily become exhausting and contrived with time.

I see your point MonsieurTornado but I don't think i dislike them because I feel betrayed as a true punk who subscribes exclusively a certain facet of the Punk Ethos but because I feel betrayed in a different way - that they used to be visceral, vitriolic and goddamn wonderful and when a band with that much potential goes on auto-pilot it's just like ugh y'know, i don't think it has anything to do with them being punk specifically

Mhm, I can see that too. I'm not saying everybody is going to dislike this because of the abandonment of punk ethos, but in general I believe that's where most of the negative reception is coming from. I felt like New Moon was definitely a band on auto-pilot too.
