Two Songs in... really like 'Time to Dance'

Edit: Really like 'Beat to Beat' too.

edit 2: Really Really like 'Psychotherapy'.

I think I'll end up liking this one more than the debut.

That 5/4 groove on The Man Is Dead is so fucking heavy.

Very surprised - almost shocked - Trey. It seems like you are very much in favor of the direction they have headed in, since at least 2 of the 3 tracks you mention are a major part of the style change.

That's why I think this album is legit; it isn't more of the same. We've had the same-ish sound for a few EPs and their debut. I wanted to see if they could expand the boundaries and produce something different... and they did.

Disagree that they had the same-ish sound over the 4 prior releases, but agree that this isn't more of the same. I even agree with "expanding their boundaries & producing something different", but if they had recorded a rap record, that would have also been the case.

I may be one of the few, but I think this is better than the debut.

You & Trey are ganging up on me.

This album has polarized opinion - both here & elsewhere.

Loved the review, and my rating will probably be similar...3.5 to a 4. The first 3 songs do it for me

more than most of the rest, but there wasn't a single song that I felt like skipping. 'The End', 'No

Country' and 'Psychotherapy' are also quite good.

So, basically, 60% of the album was awesome.

Thanks Sowing.

It seems No Country & Psycotherapy are the barometers here.

I just don't get the negative comments about this album *at all*. Are we listening to the same album? Although "Prisoner" is in my top 50 albums of all time (been a music fan since the 60s), "The Brink" is there as well, although it's quite different from "Prisoner" or any of their EPs. Has anyone else listened to this album at least 50 times already? Maybe that's why I love it so much more, but I was crazy about it in under 10 listens. The Jezabels really need a lot more exposure (especially in North America), but I'm afraid the negative reviews are going to shortchange them -- in my opinion, rather unjustly. An epic 5 stars for me... easy.

Big call on the 5 stars... And remember that while I did point out some issues with the album, I would hardly call a 3.5 rating a negative review.

Nah, wasn't directly stating that your review was negative. But I am seeing a lot of negativity on the InterWebs (comments and reviews), and some of it downright nasty. I understand that music is completely subjective, and will jive differently for everyone, but I'm not getting the harshness of the negativity. Maybe I'm taking it too personally as a fan. I'm sure the band aren't nearly as sensitive about it as I am ;-) My (likely dumb) thought pattern (and it may just be me) is: negative reviews => less exposure => band calls it quits after one more attempt to reach a larger audience => less great music in the world (of course there will always be great music). Maybe I'm too passionate about this and I should probably focus my energy on more important things, though :-)

Nah, I think you're on to something. Well, all apart from the "band calls it quits" part of the equation... Although, I am (as stated in my intro paragraph) a little concerned about how they handle the limelight - positive or negative.

But yeah, I do think some of the negative comments about this LP has been over the top. It still got to #2 on the charts in Oz, so they're still selling a few albums to make some pocket money.

I see Amy MacDonald is in your list of favorites. "This Is The Life" is also in my top 50 albums list, and was the trigger that caused me to finally make my list.

Amy is also my avatar... & has been for quite some time! Who wouldn't like Ms. McDonald?

From the interviews I've seen, outwardly they appear to be handling it ok. But based on recent articles, they had some difficult times after their last tour (seemed to be hardest on Haley). So it could be an issue, although it seems to me a normal human reaction of the realization of creating a follow up to a great debut.

I'm figuring a concert mid-2012 was around the time they were struggling with this issue directly, so the emotions were probably more raw at the time.

Yeah, that's my guess as well. Apart from Hayley (who is a little eccentric in her own way) they all seem to be pretty introverted. We can only hope they get through all the limelight - & negativity - and even become a better band for it.

Ah, didn't recognize her from the small avatar image. Yep, love her second album as well.
