I kinda get what you're saying about the songwriting but that rating hurts, still great review.

"These tracks were clearly re-imagined to point out the negative truths of the original songs and to make a political statement of sorts, however this statement came about twenty years too late and became totally irrelevant. "

I don't think so. You can apply the lyrics to all kinds of worship not just the Jim Jones cult.

"The album is eerily depressing but it seems to offer no emotional compromise that could allow the listener to gain any perspective or commiseration with the artist. It is pessimistic, nihilistic and downright gloomy"

So, what's bad about this? Neofolk is not supposed to be all too jolly.

Sure it can be applied to other forms of worship, but it was meant to be taken as a statement. Taking a song that was recorded by a bunch of cultists 20 years before and flipping them around is just kind of silly. An original track with substantial lyrics would have made more of an impression in my opinion, but I guess I don't really get this band anyways so who knows.

"So, what's bad about this? Neofolk is not supposed to be all too jolly."

I get that it isn't supposed to be jolly, but it's just so melodramatic that I cannot commiserate with it. I feel no emotional connection with the music, too me it's just gloomy and depressing just because it can be and what is the point of that.

I like the idea of taking a gospel and turning it into a gloomy folk song. To me this is one of the aspects I really love about this album - something supposed to spread hope is turned into the opposite. The album just vibrates with pessimism, but at the same time it is fragile and poetic.

Wow, really surprised by the rating... I thought this was universally hailed as one of the best neofolk records? I really liked it.
