I've always thought Jeremy to be a great vocalist

ye Departures is kinda derivative too but at least the vox sound more impassioned

Travels is a solid 4.5, haven't actually heard any other Defeater cause the whole "every album is a different vantage point in this overkilled story" is pretty awful yeah

new album's lyrics are hard to scrutinize given the subject matter, but I've walked away from every other TA album really unimpressed lyrically

literally listened to Departures once so I don't even know what to compare here lol

Departures have better vocalist, but yea they're just as bland and repetitive

fair enough

the lyrics on Stage Four are prob amplified by the subject matter but they are really gorgeous. Parting the Sea had some amazing lyrics as well...

I dunno man, Bolm's lyrics always seem really cramped by his insistence on specific rhyme schemes; part of why their music as a whole kind of blurs together for me. That approach is fine once and a while but doing it as often as he does feels kind of juvenile and lazy.

...to the beat has the best lyrics imo. they may not be phenomenal poetry or anything but they are very easily relatable and jeremy pulls off the straightforward style really well

ugh the new TA is already growing off me

this happens every time, I tell myself it's better than I think but after like 3-4 listens I just find it really grating

shame, cause they're def musically improving their songcraft imo, but goddamn Bolm is such a weak vocalist in such weird ways. Like, his flow I guess feels stunted and awkward, and not in a good way? Like a 16-year-old was trying to improvise something over it? Shame, cause he does have an occasional great line, but the delivery almost always ruins it, and it's not even like he's a -bad- vocalist tone-wise.

i would back this band going the L Shaped Man route tbh considering the vox are 80% of the problem
