Always thought them more to be very harsh thrash vocals.
Seriously tho how the hell didnt Chucks throat explode during the recording of that cover of Painkiller? The man goes insane on that track

Pre Individual Thought Patterns albums were pure death metal. But yeah it is more thrash with harsh vocals in the final 4.

Eunuch, you are a terrible user.

yoonuk has a point, the last death metal death album is human
i don't understand why people get so butthurt over the simple fact that just because the band is called "death", they didn't strictly make "death metal"
even chuck knew and agreed about this if you actually do your research and watch interviews

Either way, splitting hairs in order to have arguments about the genre of a band is lame as shit, and kills threads at alarming rates.

Don't get how this isn't death metal. It's different from practically every other band and it's a far variation of the genre, absolutely, but this is still reasonably categorized under death metal.
|

its really just prog metal with rough vocals, that isnt what constitutes death metal
|

listen to scream bloody gore or leprosy, that's death metal
you'll notice they are quite different realms of music

Everything they did after those albums is better though.
I thought it was agreed upon that Death were death/prog. Cause they have... like elements of both.

Oh yah absolutely, I've jammed all of Death's shit and there is without a doubt a massive change in sound from albums 1 to 7, but I still hear a huge amount of dm elements beyond the vocals in this album. But, in the same way, I can hear traces of prog metal starting with Leprosy and thrash in all of their albums.

To me Leprosy sounds as much like a thrash metal album as it does like a death metal album, but you know, I don't shit my pants when people call it a death metal album.
