to me, the intro solo on scavenger of human sorrow is the death metal equivalent of the buddy holly meme

Don't worry, it took me 10 years to realize this album wasn't as great as I once thought it was
(still great tho)

If this album was just the first 6 songs, it would be one of the hardest 5s ever for me

The final three songs - especially the Painkiller cover - just don't do much of anything for me. They're bloated, directionless, and in the case of Painkiller, straight-up obnoxious.
But hot damn, are those first six songs fucking fantastic

I actually like the painkiller cover

To be fair, I've always been extremely mixed on bands including covers on albums of otherwise original material. It's very rare that I actually think covers belong on a tracklist of originals, with two prime examples of Astronomy Domine on Nothingface and the various covers on Jeff Buckley's Grace

Yeah im generally not a fan of covers. Even the painkiller one i dont love but I do think it's pretty well-done

i always forget about the "painkiller" cover tbh but whenever I listen to it, i'm blown the fuck away. one of the best metal covers no question

Painkiller cover rules. The album does not (relative to other Death) but is still great. Either this or SH is their weakest for me.

Best
though I treat Painkiller as a bit of a "bonus track" admittedly
|

I'm not a fan of the Painkiller cover but I also view it as a bonus track and usually just skip it.
Outside of the cover, the entire back half of "original" songs might make this my favorite ending to any Death album. The sweeping leads at the very end of A Moment of Clarity always give me goosebumps.
