in my experience, the people I've come in contact over a few years that know of electronic music don't

listen to the "cold" and "lifeless", Autechre type

i fucking haaaaaaate the term "electronic" music. Its hard to avoid using it in some ways though.

Like when you describe an album as electronic, people who lack music knowledge and interest assume your talking about some EDM sort of avicii stuff.

Exactly, people see "electronic" and think Deadmau5. This album does fall within the much broader definition but most people are le stupid

your meant to be superior in both intelligence and dignity if you listen to IDM over EDM.

Hence the "your", right?

I kind of disagree with the whole electronic music = edm thing. I'm sure that there are a group of people who do have that kind of mentality, but realistically they're only going to have that mindset if the review itself doesn't do a decent enough job of separating the two (not saying yours didn't btw)

Maybe it's because I personally know a number of people with that mentality that I feel the need to mention it in my review. Thinking about it, quite a few musical genres/terms have weird negative connotations like that

Like if I were to label a band as "progressive", the number of people I know whose minds would leap to Rush or something and roll their eyes despite the massive scope of the genre

I don't really get the whole making a joke out of it. Like, what is there to make a joke about? It's electronic music...

electronic is as about as vague as rock as a genre.

I hate this whole genre bashing thing, labeling artists with genres seems so pretentious. Yeh you know, its downtempo ambient funk with a splash of deep house. This is what ive heard people say IRL.. im like ....wtf

That's why some people avoid that pretentiousness by simply referring to it as electronic music...

I mean, you know you're undermining your own argument now, right?

No im saying, using electronic as a broad label is stupid. I personally describe albums by comparing similar sounding artists.

comparisons is a much better descriptive tool than genre labeling these days

And yet you also think actually being specific enough to say that something is house, techno, or drum & bass etc is just as stupid/pretentious (because you know, calling something what it might actually be is somehow a bad thing)

It's really hard to describe albums well... broad labels don't tell you anything and have stupid connotations, specific genre descriptions often sound pretentious, artist comparisons sometimes work although the ones I made in this particular review didn't go down well lol

Don't really get the pretentiousness personally. If an artist describes himself as a dubstep producer, why would it be a negative to describe his/her output as such? The only pretentiousness I see here is:
