I still think 'King of No Man' received too much hate. Yeah, it doesn't come close to this tbh, but it has its share of bangers, and it has that kind of awkward, sophomoric charm (I know these guys had an album before TFIC but I don't really count that one) that keeps me coming back - I think it would've had a much better reception had it been released before this. But oh well.

I cant agree, simply because there isn't more than one song on there i like to any degree

I like KoNM, but the production is one of the most baffling artistic choices I can think of.

I dont mind the production, i just think some of the songwriting is shitty and that they didnt translate Bobby's solo songs very well into full band songs. And i was disappointed that 3 of the songs on the album are songs ive already heard, especially after waiting so long.

I actually quite liked KONM, but the production is downright atrocious. It destroys any greatness going on there. But I always go back to the title track, Smash 2, Hunting Trip, and Future is Cancelled part 2. But yeah, half the tracks are a bit bland to bad

I can't argue that it's comparatively disappointing - it'd be like if 'On Avery Island' came out after 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea'. But on its own accord, I still think it's a surprisingly strong album, bogged down by a few forgettable tracks but counterbalanced well enough with a couple really great ones .

I still come back to Trying Year, Books, Cannonless, Smash 2, The Future Is Cancelled Pt. II, and Hunting Trip. Water and Crow are also solid. Dance of Joy, The King of No Man, and (especially) Don't Show Bill are probably the band's three weakest tracks (excluding their debut LP entirely), but that leaves me still with eight good-to-great songs.

Maybe I'm just too optimistic but I listened to this on repeat when it came out and my initial disappointment eventually turned into a soft appreciation, and it (thankfully?) hasn't grown off me since that time.

I have always defended KONM, but I am gunna cut that from now on ... I have only ever returned to the gorgeous title track.

I still quite like it. A fine 3.5 that I legitimately enjoy listening to. It's nowhere near as great as this but I like returning to it.

^these are pretty much exactly my thoughts on it. And I'm still convinced it would be far beter received had it been the predecessor to this (rather than the successor, which inevitably paints it as a disappointing follow-up act).

the worst thing about King of No Man is the fact that half of it is just re-done versions of songs from Bobby Barnett's acoustic solo album
