black metal is inherently corny and that's why it's cool

Exactly!! I remember I ripped all the pics out of the album booklets for The Principle of Evil Made Flesh, Pure Holocaust and The Somberlain and hung them all over my room when I was like 14 or 15 lmao. So cheesy but thats why I love it.

100% man, feel the exact same. that's why i love immortal. no pretension, just dudes larping in the forest making evil jams about wizards and shit. that's why varg didn't fuck with them.

I think it’s so funny when people try to take metal seriously. We’re just a bunch of nerds screaming about shit over sick riffs. Yes it’s art but nobody should be taking themselves that seriously.
Except tool that’s high art obv

Completely unrelated but kinda related, Futures you heard Cân Bardd? They embrace the forest cheese and it is so mossy

In terms of overall consistency/impact on my bm journey Immortal is probably top 3 for me. When I first started it was all about Cradle, Dimmu, Immortal, Mayhem Borknagar, Ulver, Satyricon, Darkthrone, Burzum, Enslaved, Windir, Rotting Christ, Leviathan, and Dissection. Those were the core bands that got me into bm.

Black metal has shitloads of faces
There's the self aware cheesy stuff Immortal
The unself aware cheesy stuff like early Mayhem
There's the more legitimately fucked up and occult stuff like Akhlys and DSO
Nature / pagan stuff like early Ulver
Post metal / nature focused stuff like Agalloch
Classical / Neofolk tinged stuff like Aquilus
Blackgaze stuff like Deafheaven
Blackened doom like Ruins of Beverast
I can't think of many other umbrella genres where two releases can be so aesthetically and even musically different from each other
That's why it's probably my fav genre overall
