The crazy thing if you think about it is that SH3 you just fucking go from nightmare to nightmare. In the other games you get to run around in Silent Hill, or Henry's Apartment. Not here. That first bathroom is the only point of peace in the game. You go from the Mall straight to the subway, straight to the construction site / office building and so on. Nonstop tension.

And Dance With Night Wind is still the GOAT Yamaoka.

probably my favorite game, the look of it is still incredible by today's standards. it's so hellish and visceral. I love all the SH games but none of them are this grimy and teeming with dark energy and pulsating tortured flesh even all over the walls. this one is way more scary than the others but is more abstract and less straight forward than 2, I think that's why it gets less attention. this has the best ambience I've ever experienced. there's more of a focus on the body horror/transformation/birthing process thing which is really unique for a videogame. my ranking is SH 3>2>4>origins>1 and then who cares after that.

also, I highly recommend finding the 'complete rip' osts for all the games and not the commercial releases, they all cut a lot of great songs but SH3 & origins especially have a lot of great tracks and ambience cut

Out of all silent hill games, the 4th is my favorite and the one that scared the most shit out of me. THIS and 2 have the best game soundtracks ever. Alira Yamaoka is god

keep in mind I have to replay 1 rabid, I just played through origins and like the soundtrack more than 1 but I don't doubt 1 is prob better in many ways.

The 4th one is definitely the most unique. it's one of the most interesting gaming experiences I've ever had, it's such a cool game that is unlike anything else. it might actually have the best story of any of them too, it's very engrossing.

silent hill 1 (game) is rly not that great to play imo. hasn't aged well. the soundtrack is pretty damn solid though. 2, 3, and 4 (games and soundtracks) are all classics though

i don't agree at all... SH1 is still fucking classic gaming experience everyone should play at least once.

big fan of ps1 graphics and overall aesthetic myself, tho. But there's not a single reason not to play it if you're a fan of horror games.

SH1 is kind of a tough sell now, but I still think it has several of the most terrifying environments in the series. Otherworld School went fucking unmatched for the rest of the run, imo.

SH4 is spectacular, I agree. Hard 8.5/10 for me, and only because Henry is not the most interesting guy in the world, and having Eileen for the entire second half can get a little annoying. The S/T is ALMOST as good as 3, for me.

I really like Henry and Eileen. Henry is pretty interesting but he's mysterious and subtle because he's quiet and the story isn't about his past

There is nothing in a game that has fucked me up as much as waking up in my bedroom in SH4 and hearing the words "I am always watching...". Just thinking about it right now guves me major goosebumps

Cynthia's death scene in that game is top 3 SH moments, IMO.

Used to not like the inclusion of vocals on the theme songs post-Silent Hill 2, but lately ive really been enjoying them. Obviously 'You're Not Here' is phenomenal, but I used to find it unfitting for the game's atmosphere, and while that may still be true to some extent, its such a great track that its easy to overlook that (arguably) minor flaw. I especially like the theme tracks in SH4 these days, theres a gorgeous simplicity that has made them stick with me all these years. Still, something about Silent Hill 2's OST still resonates with me in a way that the other games have never been able to replicate. If one thing is true about any of the soundtracks though, its that Akira Yamaoka is a master of atmosphere.

I love Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, she is a fantastic singer and every song that features her in the series is a classic. her songs in SH4 really set the tone, the style and atmosphere wouldn't be the same without her. I prefer the ost in 3, 4 and origins compared to 2 but they are all 10/10

only have played the first game, but I've got the OSTs for the first three, and I think this is by far my favorite - so many good songs and beats on here

(I'm actually about due to give SH2 a shot if my laptop can run it properly... if not, I know it can run SH3 cus I've already given that a test run, so I can just move on to that... very curious to hear how the songs on here play out in that game)
