i'm probably one of the biggest national fans on this website obviously i'm going to listen more. but knowing the band and already being so familiar with their style, i doubt it will grow much more beyond what it has. it does not sound much different from the last three at all. it's a clear mix of high violet / boxer style, but slowed to a crawl for most of its duration

I somewhat agree that this is their first album where they don't progress with their sound, and almost to an extent "reflect back," though I don't see this as a negative thing. I really liked the direction they took with this, but hey, down in the southern hemisphere it's becoming cold as hell, and this is most definately suiting my mood.

if i was depressed im sure this would be a 5, but as someone who has been the happiest he's ever been in his life i can't vibe with it as much as i'd like. apart from appreciating the amazing turns of phrase here and there, it's simply their most mopey album. they've gone from somewhat angry tinctures to feelings of giving up and helplessness; being carried away by the undertow as a constant theme

Fair enough. Note, I'm not depressed, more comfy than anything; though studying at uni is rather stresssful.

that's one thing i felt when listening to this, it needs some more faster paced songs and with more drumming from bryan...cuz let's face it, the man is a magician behind the kit

i have just discovered that it's a grower. maybe that means i should try high violet again, as i didnt like that........

edit: lol, taken from p4k - "The only term that’s dogged the National more than that one is “grower,” a slightly backhanded remark implying that enjoying them requires an inordinate investment, or that it’s more cerebral than physical. "

i hate the whole "grower" mentality for albums. when people mention it they use it to justify why they don't like something at first...it didn't really grow on them they just forced themselves to like it; they are still the same songs. also, nearly every single album in the world is a "grower" so what's the point of even mentioning it

growers are the real deal. some albums rule at first but wear off pretty quickly. others reward repeat listens, especially these days when people are often on the internet or chatting or distracted while they listen. i might hear things differently, for better or worse, if i jam it with headphones and pay total attention. sometimes it just clicks after a few spins.

"when people mention it they use it to justify why they don't like something at first". I like this alot - just not to the extent of Boxer or High Violet yet (and I agree with what Shadow said up above). maybe repeat listens will change that. if not, who cares? it's still great.

what are some albums that genuinely were great right off the bat? i probably can't name any off the top of my head out of the thousands i've heard. sure, sometimes when you listen for the first time, you can tell if something is your deal or not, but you're not fanatic about it in that moment. something either grabs you or it doesn't, but i do contend that there is no way to love anything immediately

I bought the vinyl last night (this record-store had late open although it was a holiday). I've heard it 4 or 5 times since already, lol

And just received Frank Turner's latest on vinyl in the mail. Today is the best day ever, except I gotta go have a late-night workshift in a little while
