Good review, thanks for that.
Loved the album.
But I'm a huge Satriani fan, so that was perhaps innevitable.
His sense of timing / phrasing / soul and expression are pretty much unequaled.
Vai moves me, but nowhere near as much as Satch, it's a different feel: with Vai I'm half hearing / listening with a view to the technique, with Satch it just 'feels' good
Beck is just about as far out on your own as you can be in the world of guitar players. Good comparison with Sach actually, they both tend to march to the beat of different drums.

^^^^^^ The force is strong in this one.
Beck tends to be the guitarist other pros bow down to. Both Satch and Vai sing his praises like nothing else. Anybody who likes virtuosos but has never heard any of his work, I'd definitely recommend tracking some of it down.
Bear in mind too, Beck makes most of his weird noises and textures armed only with his guitar, an amp, and a wah. The man doesn't even use a pick, and the things he does are utterly alien to most of us.

I think part of the problem with Beck is he tends to get lumped with a certain generation of guitar player, and even compared directly to Clapton / Page as an 'era' thing.
Few people realise how he's continued to move on and grow.
He's similar to Satch in that he wont rest on easy ground: he's interested in challenging and pushing. Like Satch, I don't always get in to what he does straight away, as some of it is not immediately obvious. But, if you don't miss occassionally, you aint trying hard enough!

i think Satch and Vai are both equal in greatness and Virtuosity. But satch is more interesting and cool, whereas Vai is more expresive and soulfull. Both of them are just SO GOOD!!!! They use the guitar to speak, its like another (beautiful) language.

Comparing Steve Vai and Joe Satriani is like comparing Apples and oranges. They both have different sounds and appel to different people. Personally I think that satch is better because he puts more soul into his music rather then just make werid noises. Satch also taught VAi which makes him not only a face melting guitarist but a teacher of a face melting Guitarist too. Great review.

If someone woulod post tabs for crowd chant that would be amazing.

I was trying to think if what songs Steve Vai has done that stick in my head.....Ummmmm.....none come to mind, although I do remember him in the movie Crossover...

I saw Satch for the first time two days ago in Dallas. Since I bought Surfing With The Alien when it came out, I am not sure why it took me so long to listen to Joe actually play live. I payed $125 for front row seats. Ummmmmm, Yep, it was worth every penny.

I recall all of the older songs he played. His reproductions were flawless and his tonation (is that a word?) has become more rich and soulful when compared to his original versions. Perhaps because of better gear? Or perhaps it was Dave Lerue's influence? In any case, the new stuff pulls it all together as well as linking back to styles that sublime Borg Sex.

With the exception of Hendrix whom I saw at Woodstock, I have never heard a better guitar player in this dimension of reality. Comparing Joe to anyone else is pointless. Its like arguing about Michael Jordan vs Kobe. Climb in your SUV and leave that argument where it belongs.

OK, enough lecturing to the younger generation. You are all blessed to have this guy still playing and not dead due to a drug overdose or muzzled by commercial pressures to 'put out a hit' He just has fun and likes his fellow artists - Eric Johnson and Andy Timmons - who joined him for a 5 song encore. Django Reinhardt is the greatest guitarist ever, no contest. Two fingers on his left hand. Hendrix and Santana tie for second with Jimmy Page, then Eddie Van Halen, Then Angus and Malcolm Young.

Satch certainly is the most melodically capable guitarist around, but I would have to say that Mark Knopfler owns him at soulful playing.

I think the guitarist from Panic! At the Disco gives him a run for his money man.

He is definitely one of the best guitarists in the world. I saw him at RamsHead Live in Baltimore on April 17th during his Super Colossal tour. It was nuts. The man played with his teeth!
