I agree! I mean I think I have this as a 3.5/on a curve but yeah every Beatles album is excellent

Entire Beatles discog is essential just to see how rapidly and effectively the band pushed boundaries.

Oh deffo, they were the band that got me into music in the first place so I have heavy nostalgia for literally every song they've done. Maybe that shows bias on my part but tbh listening to these records in context just assures me that they really were *that* much better than the vast majority of their contemporaries (though the Stones and especially the Kinks are growing on me a LOT this time around)

The Kinks were better.

Only songs worth listening to this for are No Reply and Mr. Moonlight, rest is filler.

I don't know who those are, but I'm probably one, so yeah.

I'll Follow the Sun, Baby's in Black, Eight Days a Week, I'm a Loser...not to mention some of those covers are pretty fire (though Honey Don't is one of the most underwhelming tracks of their catalog)

"I don't know who those are, but I'm probably one, so yeah."
You'd be surprised how many people go on about how the Kinks were the best band of the British Invasion and knock the socks off the Beatles, the Stones, the Who, etc. I respect the hell out of what they were writing during the mid and especially the late '60s, but I also reckon a lot of people who have that view also possess anti-chart music sentiments and probably see the Beatles as predominantly commercial fluff, which is utter nonsense

The Who and The Kinks were both better than The Rolling Stones and The Beatles, that's for sure (The Yardbirds were also better than those two). But out of all them, I like The Who more.

Rec the best 20 songs by the Kinks and I'll give them a listen (I can't even remember the Kinks albums I've listened to as they seemed so unremarkable). I can almost guarantee they'll be nowhere near as good as the best 20 songs by the Beatles.

"Waterloo Sunset" is fuckin' amazing tbh
|

Yeah it is. It's also one of the only Kinks songs I can remember, besides Lola and You Really Got me. I'm listening to Face to Face right now and I can tell you it's no Revolver (and I don't even think Revolver is a classic).

A top 20? That's kind of an unnecessarily big number. I can tell you 10 though, even if at least for me that's still more than enough:
1. Village Green
2. Do You Remember Walter
3. Waterloo Sunset
4. Phenomenal Cat
5. Shangri-La
6. All of My Friends Were There
7. Animal Farm
8. David Watts
9. People Take Pictures of Each Other
10. Sunny Afternoon

Also love the "heavy" kick in the chorus of Every Little Thing.

i know i'm being a normie but on the strength of "the kinks are the village green preservation society" (that's what it's called right) saying they're better than the beatles is absolutely nuts. same with the who. just no way
"see my friends" is probably my favorite kinks song that i've heard and it's not as cool as the beatles' "indian"-influenced songs. they're just not in the same league

The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society is a better album than any Beatles album. The Who not only has one, it has three albums better than anything made by The Beatles. Being honest, I think I can count the songs by the Beatles that I like with just one hand. Also, just mentioning The Yardbirds again because Over Under Sideways Down is a cool album. Oh, though I do know this is specifically about British Invasion bands, honestly, America had the best band of those years: The Byrds.
