I didn't enjoy this anywhere near as much as the debut, left me feeling confused & alone. Whatever that 2nd track is called is pretty sweet though.

I'll never stop saying it; 3.6 is a disgustingly low average for this monster. Red too, for that matter. Terminal and Slaughter don't have shit on this.

I certainly feel Red Sky is massively underrated (on Sputnik), not sure why I didn't connect with this the same. I'll try again sometime.

This is a solid 5 without a doubt. At the Gates used to be actually innovative and insane before they streamlined their sound and ruined it

i like this album but they were better both before and after

they were a slightly more melodic/mournful Entombed before TSD and SoS

That is the least accurate description I’ve ever heard.

You’re right, I’ve seen some pretty inaccurate descriptions (read Angry Metal Guy’s review for the new Spectral Voice album if you want big laughs).

But still, this is a unique and progressive album that stands alone. Nothing like Entombed.

Not as groundbreaking as TRITSIO, but still brilliant.

I respectfully disagree. Clearly not a straight up copycat of the Swedish dm sound that Entombed pioneered, but not all that different to me. TRITSIO was a bit more innovative, but they didn't establish a "signature sound" until the next release, which they refined on SotS (love it or hate it, obviously it inspired a ton of crap).

these early records along with Gardens of Grief are great, but I never found them revolutionary, especially when compared with other stuff from the time period like The Chasm and Hypopcrisy, among others.

In Flames is one of the worst bands I’ve ever heard - and yes, I’ve heard their “classics” (they’re actually all I’ve heard)

I've always thought the In Flames - At the Gates comparison was pretty flawed. In Flames was always more focused on major key melodic flights and somber passages, At the Gates took Swedish death metal and eventually went melodeath while keeping the pure aggression of their Swedish roots. Totally different animals with At the Gates having more credibility in most cases (imo of course).

I still really dig the first 4-5 In Flames records though

I hate the Gothenberg sound that AtG pioneered. They should have stuck to the TRITSIO sound.

I mean Grotesque, Liers In Wait and At the Gates were once the greatest trio of bands in death metal. How the mighty have fallen...

Debut is way better than this and the debut is a mess
