Sorry, didn't realise the staff were pitchfork editors now.

I didn't know astronauts preferred real Orange Juice instead of Tang either.

It looks really confusing in the staff reviews section when there's the tag 'staff pick' attached to your review (js). Sputnik is trolling you. Haha.

See, I don't only read reviews to find out about new artists. I just like reading peoples thoughts on music I'm interested in, and staff tend to be a bit more well spoken. So that's why I brought up the staff thing, more a point of interest than a genuine concern anyway.

The sheer amount of votes and average album rating says much more about this album than any review written by anyone at this point.

Not really, since bands like Parkway Drive also get a shittonne of positive votes. Weight of numbers means not much when I'm uninterested in popularity.

I can't really fathom why it isn't great to you. Like I said earlier, most of your complaints for this are mine for DE. It doesn't

really make sense, it just is.

Someguest -true, but I'm not sure what that really says. Lots of anonymous users, but Deftones are only on the borderline of

mainstream (or so I would say from the size of their concerts) so I dunno what that means. I'd prefer words than numbers

Yeah see I totally disagree. Rocket Skates is a lot of fun, Beauty School is beautiful but mostly that album just slides right off my ears.

This one sticks. It has more air to breath than DE does, and yet is far more instrumentslly dense. The choruses are better (romantic dreams and goon squad are the only choruses I would say actually aren't great)

I find I far easier to tell instruments apart than on previous records. I would DE lacked depth too.

There has been a strange pattern with reviews of this album, with lots of websites giving it high ratings straight out the gate (for example Drowned in Sound and Antiquiet)... Really well written reviews but maybe in the shadow of goodwill been extended to the band at the moment. It is understandable that there is now a backlash, given that many of these people have read the first wave of reviews, and are making sense of them while listening to the album

I would like to say I have been a fan of the band going back to the release of Around the Fur, and I have liked everything the band have done since up to Diamond Eyes. I am on about my tenth spin of Koi No Yokan, and it is just sinking in. It works well as a whole and songs like 'What Happened To You' are beginning to grow on me.

What I didnt understand about the early reviews was how the reviewer had drawn their conclusions so quickly. I still hear new things on Saturday Night Wrist and have a different appreciation now than I did in 2006. I highlight that album because I think it compliments KNY, even down to the layout of the artwork and how it fits the music.

The reviews of 9 or 10 at this point would say to me that this album has real classic standout songs/anthems like My Own Summer, Be Quiet, Digital Bath or even Hole In The Earth. I believe at this point it doesnt but its a really strong album but will take time to grow on you.

Although its a contradiction here, but maybe put away the reviews and just take this album on as your own experience... I find it more rewarding

The option 'staff pick' could only make sense if it took into account the average staff and contributor rating. Then, let's say all the albums of the average rating over a 3.8 would qualify.

Yeah but I think you can partly attribute the really high rating to the masses of people who rated the album a 5 before anyone had even heard it. I bet there are at least a hundred people who forgot to change their rating since then. How many of those 5's would be totally genuine?

Also remembering that people rate in comparison to the current rating. Do they agree that it's good? Then they'll rate the average; if the average was 3.5 they'd give it that rating, too. Do they think it's really good? Then the only option above the average is 5, which without an average they might not agree with.

I guess we'll find out how much herding has gone on by next year. I don't expect to hear much of this album post-end of year lists. As far as I can tell it simply is not a classic, however you look at it. It has no defining features.

Also, the Staff Pick is a mindfuck because the option to make an album a staff picl shows up every so often for me and seemingly does nothing

Ignore that, it's outdated and broken

I would as well. Far more than I would have expected. Like I said earlier, they're mainstream but only just. The sheer volume of hype doesn't quite click to me

I actually had this problem with DE too.

I found the album enjoyable nonetheless but it often was difficult to see what was a chorus and what was not for me.

The only song that this happened for me here is Leathers.

In fact I'd say DE had the least depth of their discog, aside from Adrenaline
