Not necessarily a bad album but for me it's just so exhaustive. I mean, a lot of the songs seem to be too long for their own good and it kind of makes the instrumentation worse than it seems. The vocals though are my main problem with this album. They often sound tired and just end up roaring through the lyrics. There a few really good tracks to be found here though, my favourite being the last two songs, 'Tester' and 'Bare'. The former has a lot of good emotion pouring throughout and the closer is excellently written, ending the album on a somewhat interesting note.

I'm really surprised about the response to this album and I stand by my 4.5. This was a huge turning point for Anthrax as Dan Spitz and Joey were out, leaving their older thrash roots behind. I don't think for a second that they went this direction to be part of the new metal scene. Stomp 442 has some of the most dense, grooving and crushing riffs since Helmet's Betty.

Listen to 'Drop the ball', 'Riding Shotgun', 'Random Acts of Senseless Violence', Fueled...fuck me, these songs are killer!

I've been a fan since State of Euphoria and this change through the mid 90's was more than welcome.

I've been growing on to this album quite a bit. In fact, that's the way it's been for me with the

Bush-era, but I was instantly hooked on SOWN.

The only thing that stands out of this album are Random Acts of Senseless Violence and Fueled. Other

songs are just too mediocre...

Edit: I decided to give this album a shot again based on earlier comments and the album really doesn't

give a first pleasant impression at all. While the tracks I mentioned above are the only standouts,

Nothing, King Size and Bare (which is a decent closer to an awful album) grew on me over the time, but

I'm aware that this album can't be rated higher than 2.5

I do disagree with some of this review. The bass is highly audible (those bass lines are pretty tasty), the guitars are crunching, and there are some solid tracks here ("Drop The Ball", "Bare", "Random Acts", "Perpetual Motion"). The lyrics are often bad, but the instrumentation is good enough to make up for some of those flaws.

I notice on all of the Bush-era Anthrax albums, there is at least one song I love that everyone else seems to forget about. On Sound of White Noise, it was Invisible, and on this it's King Size.

This is really beneath the band, and John sure is not used as greatly as in Armored Saint. I still would take it over St. Anger any day though.
