Even though this is like the alternate, refined version of Court until Cat Food, some of these are superior in some ways: Cadence and Cascade has more going on than I Talk to the Wind, and In the Wake of Poseidon is pretty much as good as the epics on Court. It's not amazing all the way through, but this is still excellent.

I'd honestly say Poseidon is better than Epitaph

I love Poseidon but Epitaph is top 3 KC for me

Libra's Theme really pushes it into that "classic" territory.
Take 3, which is on the new box, really gets into detail although Lake's vocals aren't on it until the final verse. Less overdubs so that final choral section is reduced to just one voice.

Man I really never appreciated their jazzier albums too much, except for Lizard

Incredibly good review! I love the contextualization part and you also do the album itself justice. Even thou it's basically a track-by-track you give a very good impression of the album as a whole.
Album is great and underrated, i kinda like it's diversity in mood and style and while it makes it perceivable that it's the output of a band drifting apart it challenges you with every song (especially the b side) in a different way...

Finally spun this for the first time ever (thanks Spotify!). I understand the ubiquitous criticism that it's essentially "In the Court of the Crimson King: Part II," but (1) I personally think it's different enough in overall tone, content, and melody. Merely haring album/song structure seems like a weird criticism to level in my opinion. And also (2) ITCOTCK is one of my favorite albums of all time, so if we essentially get a B-side/Part 2 version of it...well of course it's going to be amazing. Not every great album needs to be a watershed.

Fairly lukewarm to this so far, I can definitely see the comparisons to ITC, but not sure a lesser version will satisfy those cravings in the same way.

I think I first gave this a 4.0 but its grown so much on me in the last half-year. 'Pictures of a City' is just too good.

people should discuss more about this, definitely a bit under-appreciated

There's a lot to appreciate but the main flaw is the lack of ideas and self-plagiarizing ItCotCK. It's silly how similar Pictures of a City is to 21st Century Schizoid Man. I like the quiet 2 minute instrumental part in the second half a lot tho.
Cadence and Cascade and the t/t are two of the band's best songs, despite both drawing from counterparts in ItCotCK (I Talk to the Wind and Epitaph). I enjoy the Peace songs a lot too.
Cat Food is pretty goofy, but I can't help but like it. Sounds like proto-Lizard with the jazziness.
The Devil's Triangle I'm not so sure about. I guess it's counterpart is Moonchild despite sounding different. I like how bizarro and unpredictable it is, but rarely get the urge to listen to the whole thing.

The lack of ideas could be attributed to half of the band quitting. A third of the material written for this ended up on the McDonald and Giles album, most notably Birdman.

Interesting, is that album worth checking? I know of it but have never heard it

It's okay??? (Very impartial to it)
Don't go in expecting it to be like Crimson though

Love McDonald and Giles. It does occasionally remind me of the Crim. It's hard to rank albums by Crimson members (plural, ELP doesn't count). If I had to, top 3 would be:
1. UK - UK
2. Fripp - Exposure
3. McDonald and Giles
