I think I am going to listen to the original Oliver's Army to see what you're getting all upset about, menawati, lol.
|
| |
lol because they turned the pop song into a rock song. I didn't feel like they butchered the originals personally lol I listened to all the originals and compared them!
|
| |
This video for Oliver's Army is fuckin cracking me up, lol.

I love it when he is playing in front of the beach and he just takes off into the water.
|
| |
Well ecnalzen, do u think they butchered it?
|
| |
The whole point of the song was its quirky charm and topical lyrics. None of the lyrics will mean anything to anyone who will listen to the cover version. It's a bad choice, if they wanted to cover Costello they shoulda picket Accidents Will Happen or something.
|
| |
No. But I think I could see why menawati doesn't like it. It sort of has this classic pop vibe that gets lost in the translation on Bayside's version. I like the original better to be honest.

its about the new model army that oliver Cromwell made during the english civil war, the first
professional army in England, and a lot of the lines refer to things going on at the time at the end
of the 70s in britain, it wont mean nothing to americans
|
| |
I was just going to ask about the lyrics. I have no idea what he is talking about.
|
| |
Fair enough the the original is awesome too
|
| |
some of it is just throwaway lines used in Britain a lot at the time, also refers to the berlin wall (checkpoint charlie) and chinese taking custody of hong kong
|
| |
I think they nailed Wild Night and Runaway though.
|
| |
There was a checkpoint Charlie
He didn't crack a smile
But it's no laughing party
When you've been on the murder mile
Only takes one itchy trigger
One more widow, one less white nigger
Hong Kong is up for grabs
London is full of Arabs
We could be in Palestine
Overrun by a Chinese line
With the boys from the Mersey and the Thames and the Tyne
These are the parts I don't really understand. Especially the middle section.
|
| |
checkpoint charlie - was a border control in Berlin when the Wall was up, was some trouble there
often, maybe refers to a east german guard shooting people trying to cross
hong kong up for grabs - was a british colony but japanese took over for a while then back to british
and china always claimed ownership and they finaly got it in 1997 - hence 'up for grabs'
London full of Arabs - saying at the time, many rich Saudis were buying up property there
It's basically an anti-war song. and olivers army was the first professinal army in britain (oliver
cromwells new model army)

Interesting. Thanks for explaining it.

"stop being a wet blanket menawati."
Was just having some fun with Atari.
It is a bit sad tho when an almost perfect pop single gets twisted up into a bland generic sounding rock song.
