@Kompys2000 I would love to read that. I think it’s also tied to the band’s drug habits as well. FBD is right when the drugs stopped being fun, and it definitely affected Phil’s approach to how he presents himself on the album. TGST is weirdly Pantera’s most aggressive and bitter album yet strangly it’s also their most vulnerable.
It would also be cool to examine how metal presents masculinity without it veering into condescension or defensiveness.

>just so I can go long on how Anselmo has approached masculinity throughout Pantera's career and the ways that approach was kind of deconstructed on trendkill
giving the white power knuckledragger a bit too much credit dont you think

I mean I think a lot of it was prob unintentional/subconscious, Phil is obviously a massive shithead but that doesn't mean he didn't have anything to say about how he (and a lot of Pantera fans tbh) saw the world, and I'd argue that putting that worldview under a microscope and trying to figure out what makes it tick is a worthwhile pursuit

putting phil anselmo's worldview under a microscope sounds like a profoundly useless endeavour, I mean what do you think your going to find? it won't be nuance that's for sure. it'll be ignorant, ugly, and ultimately uninteresting
that would be like reading mine kamf to look for complexities in hitler's thought, when really you wont find anything beyond german = good, jew = bad

it's hilarious to me that there are people that to this day still consider Anselmo unironically a Nazi.

"I mean he's for sure a white supremacist"
That clip is pretty damning and if it was the only point of reference one has had with Anselmo it's obviously easy to label him a Nazi.
But if you do take his explanation of this "incident" into consideration as well as past history of him opening up on the topic of racism and probably what's most important, his lyrics, then it'd be pretty easy to argue that this conclusion is a wrong one.

i could buy "i just have an inflammatory nature" if it's a 15 year old doing a nazi salute to get attention, but someone in their 40s throwing up a nazi salute isn't excusable unless maybe they're diagnosed with mental retardation

Yeah Phil strikes me more as a jackass then a nazi... or maybe I just don't want to equate a childhood hero to nazism idk lol
