I wouldn't call them prog. And if so, most things you would find annoying about prog don't apply here. There's other things that are an aquired taste (like cacophonous improvisations e.g. Providence), but those aren't very common in prog, so yeah. Don't let that label mislead you.

Oh so they're more like Pink Floyd prog than Rush prog?

Definitely more Pink Floyd than Rush, but not close to them either. Their first two albums admittedly have some symphonic prog tendencies that could be compared to what Camel was doing a few years later, but everything after that has more of a jazzy, loose feel to it, while also having moderately heavy moments (like Red's t/t or Larks Tongues). They've always been in motion, so it's kinda hard to pin down.

Fair enough Rik, sounds about as up my alley as prog can get.

'Islands' is amazing. On par with 'Lizard,' maybe even better.

'This album is so underrated.'
Your rating is exactly the same as the Sput average.

you don’t think it’s underrated. in fact, you think it is very appropriately rated.

Revisited this today (twice, actually) and for a second thought a 4.5 might look good on it. Something about 4.0 still feels more appropriate, though. Maybe one day I'll cave and find it deserving of the extra +0.5.
However, I'm still somewhat baffled at the 3.5 sput average, more so given ratings for other KC albums:
• The Power to Believe - 3.7
• THRAK - 3.6
• Three of a Perfect Pair - 3.5
• Starless and Bible Black - 3.9
• Lizard - 4.0
'Islands' is better than every single one of those albums imo, and the only ones I'd be willing to accept as superior are 'S&BB' and maaaaaaybe 'Lizard'. But 3oaPP? THRAK? What the fuck. title track is a top tier KC song, too. maybe top 5.
