agalloch have stated that all their ep's are essentially experiments

they're not really dropping or getting rid of anything

honestly this doesnt seem like an experiment at all, it just seems like an extension of the direction they went with marrow just a whole lot more boring than that album (which i really didn't think was possible).

it is a step away from their atmospheric folky whatever it is into more straightforward black metal aesthetic, which was what marrow did just not quite as dramatic as this

if you dont see that then you are dumb

That said it does wander a bit too much for my taste in the first half.

Disagree. This fixes many of the problems they had with their direction on Marrow i.e. it focuses on only one sound. Marrow was all over the place with the bm in Into The Painted Grey, that fucking awful electronic bs in Black Lake Nidstang, an attempt (and mostly a failure) to hearken back to Pale Folklore on Ghosts of the Midwinter Fires, and that completely abysmal post-rock effort on To Drown. This is more concentrated on solely bm, and it works.

I personally couldn't stand it and it completely ruined the track for me. It was great up until that point.

White EP was really, really good. I wouldn't mind them doing a neofolk LP.
