From the Nordland double LPs I think this is the weaker one - that's why I usually listen to both at once, for the maximum effect.

@garas: yeah part I is better, agreed. Listen to them together as well!

@Fukken: you mean Bathory in general or newer-Bathory-wise? I'd say Hammerheart (viking-era) or Under The Sign Of The Black Mark (bm-era) or Blood Fire Death (mixture of both) for classics and Nordland I for the newer stuff.

A bm-classic for sure. Many 2nd wavers (Darkthrone, Emperor, etc.) consider that album to be a key release in the genre.

Yeah, it has those first wave leanings for sure. Thematically and imagery-wise it's very bm too though.

Hmm, I don't know if I agree about that. Of course the lyrics matter, bm being associated with satanism/anti-religious ideology/mythology/misanthropist ideas. Plus imagery is also an indicator of genre (cowboy hats for country, baggy jeans for 90s hip hop, hipster mustache and glasses for indie, band shirts/black clothing for metal, etc.).

Of course many elements of bm are here too musically. Production is thin/lo-fi/raw/cold, riffs focus on tremolo, there's shrieking (like you mentioned), songs are fast-paced, lots of atmosphere, ...

In the separation of Bathory's eras, I think image matters too.

Doesn't matter which genre they do or do not belong to, they rule regardless.
