I tend to pay less attention to the concept and just focus on the emotion he presents, which is at an absolutely astonishing level on TFC and infinitely more potent than on the Wall. But anyway, it's all opinions etc. and I better sign off so later man.

The Final Cut wouldn't have been anywhere near as powerful if Gilmour had sung it. There's so much emotion in that album that it had to be Water's singing it as it is very much his concept.
I also think TFC has some of Water's best lyrics and that his conceptual ideas are much more well executed than they were on The Wall.

I think Waters gets way too sappy on TFC. That album is overly emotional, which makes me want to smack him and say "Get yourself together, man!" He's still one of my favorite songwriters... and I know we all have our ups and downs in life, so I don't hold anything against him. Not even his crazy ego-battles.
|
| |
The Final Cut has some of the best lyrics he's ever written. The lyrics on that album are far superior to those on The Wall imo. TFC also has one of his best vocal performances.
|
| |
Also I totally disagree about it being overly emotional. I find his personal lyrics on TFC far more effective than when he's hiding his emotions behind a fictional story as he does with The Wall.
|
| |
I disagree. I find a universal approach much more interesting than some overly personal route. The latter makes the material seem very small and egotistical. But I've never been crazy about hearing personal sob stories, as I find them incredibly uninteresting. Life can be much more expansive and dynamic than that. He could have used that emotion to drive a much larger concept, but instead it was shrunken by his ego. It's still a great album, but The Wall is much more panoramic.
|
| |
Disagree completely. I admire him from coming out with such a personal set of lyrics, it can't have been easy for him to do that and I'm sure on some level it helped him come to terms with his feelings which I find more admirable than hiding those feelings behind a fictional story. Not to mention that I find The Wall's concept overblown and not particularly well executed.

I agree that we disagree.

Yeah Jamie is right Final Cut has Waters' best lyrics with Floyd (all-time best Waters lyrics are on Amused to Death though)
The Wall's concept is pretty bad yeah
|
| |
The Wall's concept is pretty bad? It's one of the most influential concept albums on the planet. Going through the journey of a man loosing what he is in the corruption of society's pigs and sheep, while trying to
transcend the confines of ego.

It's a cool concept just handled badly
Hearing about a man's reaction to actual events and his dealing with the grief a la the Final Cut is much much more influential to me.
|
| |
So it was a bad concept... now it's a cool concept poorly executed. I see you silly rabbit. : )

What I'm saying is, on paper it's a cool concept, but the poor way in which it was executed makes the end result bad. Get it?
