Because considering his recent releases he's an easy target. Never given Last Step a listen tbh. Might check it out once I get through the backlog that's sprung up for me.

Never said dead. Did say dying. Starting to see a lot more of the mad-genius stuff pop up in trip-hop now (DJ Food, The New Law + Hermitude have all put out incredibly LPs this year) so the genre as a whole seems to be being archived as we speak. Let's be honest it's more of an influence than a movement now anyway.

"ever given Last Step a listen tbh. Might check it out once I get through the backlog that's sprung up for me."
Slower and a bit more on the spacy side from what I heard. I personally like his stuff under Vsnares more.

Idk, it never seemed THAT big to me. More like a niche-thing.

Wait, when did idm become trip hop? Or when did idm and trip hop share certain commonalities? I think the problem is that you seem to be looking for it in the wrong places, just because the big leaguers aren't dropping albums at the moment doesn't mean that idm is dead or dying.... not by any stretch of the imagination

Also, DJ Food is trip hop now?

it was like a month ago i'm not going to go digging for it. it was Jash though O_O and a couple of others actually. oh it was when Twlitchy posted that list about his "ideal electronic" albums or something and you said something along the lines of "I'd like this list more if you hadn't gotten all the albums off me" which is possibly the funniest thing you've ever said. oh deviant.

DJ Food is whatever I tell him he is.

One of the most alluring traits of IDM was, at least for me, the kind of off-hand, unexpected madness. Since we're in a Squarepusher thread, think the absolute clusterfuck that is North Circular. Delving my hand into trip-hop now and it parallels this kind of mental attitude. I was simply suggesting that producers who want to play the refined yet ballistic card are more likely to turn to trip-hop.

An idle though if there ever was one, but w/e.

I think the problem is that you seem to be looking for it in the wrong places, just because the big leaguers aren't dropping albums at the moment doesn't mean that idm is dead or dying.... not by any stretch of the imagination

I don't really look for anything, I merely take what I come across and recently what IDM I've picked up ain't been great. The best (Geskia!) may as well just be ambient.

Apparently I said it like it was supposed to be malicious, idk. I clicked on a list called "electronic discoveries" or whatever, saw a blurb that said "album's I've discovered blah blah blah" and as I scrolled through the list my immediate reaction was "I rec'd you half of these you rat bastard"

Idk man, outside of say the kind of lunacy of mashing certain genres together, I'd be hard pressed to refer to pretty much any trip hop as mental (outside of say, Tobin's early 00s stuff)

Fucking amazing review Dev. A bit tl;dr but damn the breadth of genre knowledge in this thing makes me wanna turn purple. Adam Downer might just have a challenger for the title of "Irving's fave Staff writer" now lol.
