My favorite is probably Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers, although I still enjoy their eponymous LP for a couple of songs. That's just the indie critic in me.

definitely a moody album

I liked England for the songwriting, but the rest of this doesn't come close in my books. The National has really perfected their sound, but there just wasn't enough room for them to grow into this one, i.e. why it sounds homogeneous I think.

Not to be a dick, but if you think the songwriting of the rest of the album doesn't touch England, I don't think you're listening hard enough. Honestly, the only song I could maaaaaaybe see someone considering weak in terms of songwriting is Lemonworld. All of the others have beautiful peaks and valleys, and they all happen at exactly the right times.

Okay, I said songwriting. I meant lyrics. My mistake, brick. I posted the lyrics for England on

another page of this thread.

Also, all the songs click a lot harder if you're listening to them while sad/depressed/etc. When the atmospheres match your emotions, it's much easier to immerse yourself in them. Especially when they're this good.

Well, the quality of the lyrics in all the other songs is even more prominent, so... lol

I could quote a brilliant line from every other song if I wanted to or you could just listen to the album again haha

@Brick I agree, but I think that one in particular sums up this album, and recent The National more

than any other lyric.

I really, really have tried to get into this band and this album in particular, but I just find them incredibly boring. Honestly cannot get beyond how slow and monotone it all is. I just don't get it.

Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers isn't all that slow. I like that one better than this.

Sad Songs is criminally underrated. 'Tis my second favourite after Alligator. Boxer pips this for bronze.
