Assess and enjoy the music, not the man's eating habits or political stances. Frank Sinatra was a real mother fucker, but he made some incredibly gorgeous love songs.

Yeah, but it's not like I hate him or anything =). Maybe I should've used some smiley's. If you were to see me typing here you'd see me grinning all the way through =P. He's just not a potential idol of mine, whereas Brian Molko (also a part of the english britpop scene) would be.

Yeah, I try not to get caught up in the personal lives of the musicians I like/love. I mean, unless they force their ideals and such in the music, it really doesn't pertain to my listening experience, y'know?

Sensible Gyro haha. But i quite like talking about those who create the art, also. With people like, Bowie, for example, the aritist was as crucial as the art itself.
|

I get it. Sometimes it would even make one averse to the artist. Because he doesn't stroke with your ideas on life. Happened to me more than once.

Morrissey does make some outlandish remarks; his statement regarding the Norway killings was seriously offensive.
But, when it all comes down to it, it just makes him that much more of an interesting person and, well, an icon. I mean, John Lennon said and did some fucked up shit.
During his Station To Station days, Bowie said that Britain "would benefit from a fascist ruler" and was caught possessing Nazi paraphernalia

Exactly Titan, it adds something to the interest surrounding the work because it stimulates those who are appreciative / disgusted by the remarks and behaviours. It takes someone out of the norm to say such divisive things, as it does to create something unique.

In my opinion, this is second only to Meat Is Murder, and about tied with The Queen.

Meat is my least favourite to be honest! Most have Queen at the top but this is so raw and the most punchy for me.

I'm surprised it has such little reviews, Admin hasnt even reviewed this, i mean it's The Smiths... come on. I enjoyed the review, have a Pos.

Great review. Morrissey may be a bit of a jackass, but I can't think of anyone alive today who would make a better frontman of a band. The Morrissey/Marr combo was so great, it sucks that there doesn't seem to be any chance of the Smiths getting back together.

Thank you for all the praise/pos people. My fragile ego is still miffed at that twat who left a neg without any explaination on my past 2 reviews.

Album rules, review rules, fuck the haters. Pos from me, Tom, great writing. Are you gonna do The Smiths discog? I really enjoyed your Bowie discog, had never looked into him before but I have bought 5 of his albums so far based on your reviews and I'm loving it. Might take a while to get through all of them!

TommyGun - Thanks dude! I hadn't planned on it and based on this being the most ammount of negs i've had (i know it ain't a lot but it pisses me off still when they don't even leave a comment explaining) i'm not sure really. But when people like yourself find music through my reviews, which is just a little self-indulgent hobby of mine, it makes me wanna carry on. So yeah man, i might get to the others.

Yeah it's bizarre that people negged, this is a good review man. Hadn't listened to this for a while but jammed it in the car today on the way to work. 'Still Ill' is such a great song

Thanks bro. Yeah love that one, This Charming Man rules obvs, but What Difference Does It Make? blew me away the first time i gave it proper attention. Quite fond of Miserable Lie and Hand in Glove too. Exceptional record really.
|
| |
Yeah most of them rule, I have a real soft spot for Reel Around the Fountain too, the lyrics are kind of fucked up. Lol Miserable Lie, I dig that too but I think Morrissey gets a bit carried away with that falsetto! At first I was thinking wtf is this but now I find it strangely endearing

Yeah, that falsetto! Shows of his sense of humour a little. A lot of people have this perception about The Smiths that they're a miserable band but i think there's some real joy and ironic humour in amognst their more angsty outings.
|
| |
Agreed, a lot of the more 'miserable' lyrics are sung with tongue firmly in cheek, I've laughed out loud several times listening to Morrissey whine and moan! Marr is borderline genius, one of my fave guitarists for sure
