A friend of mine who went to the Brooklyn show said that Kevin mentioned that he has ANOTHER full length album already completed in addition to the one that is releasing this Fall....why is he so prolific??

Not only my favorite album of 2012, but defiantly my favorite by Of Montreal. I am stoked to hear "Lousy with Sylvianbriar" as it sounds like it's going to be the polar opposite-sister album to this (stripped down arrangements & such). Considering half of OM's discography is of genres I NEVER listen to (electronic, glam, funk, etc), I'm mind-boggled by how they have become one of my new favorite bands. Their songs are constantly looping in my head, and I am in love with Kevin's poetic madness. yeah.

I tend to forget that the album received some pretty harsh reviews (Pitchfork for example) so when I go back to reading impressions about this album, it always leaves me bitter. I obviously realise of Montreal's style is in no way suitable to every listener, but god, I find it hard to swallow lines like '...bored by this year's turgid Paralytic Stalks.' and ' The hooks just aren't there...'. Sure, I buy completely into the Kevin Barnes universe of unhinged sex allusions/personal evisceration so my view is obscured, but it's anything but boring. And there was hardly a day for months after the release of Paralytic Stalks that I didn't have multiple tracks snaking through my head.

The album is not perfect by any measure. There are quite a few examples of uninspiring experimentation. I skip Exorcismic Breeding Knife. It does nothing for me and I can see how it would agitate anyone. It seems to me that to many people it became the example of Kevin Barnes' ego, rather than the exception that doesn't work.

Anyway, this is not a continued downward spiral of form that seems to be the consensus from many. It's an expansion of ideas and growth away from traditional structure. I never want to see Barnes edit himself if this is the result. I'll take the flab with the brilliance every day.

That comment is a perfect summation of my opinion.

This album is perfect in every sense and Kevin Barnes doesn't have a big ego he's actually kind of really vulnerable and thinks he has never written a "great" song.

Pitchfork keeps giving people this bloated image of his ego, and everyone tags along because it's an easy criticism to make.

welp, i just read the p4k review, and it is so ridiculous.

"The hooks just aren't there, though, and that's a big problem [...] With the possible exception of "Malefic Dowery", which is surprisingly lush, little here sticks."

"The most disappointing aspect of Paralytic Stalks is that lack of personality behind the music."

"it's nearly impossible to tell that Barnes is singing about anything, save for the surprisingly straightforward "Malefic Dowery""

"[the personal nature of Hissing Fauna] was obvious-- all you had to do was listen. Here, we're left sorting through lyrics like, "True love never mattered/ The two donkey jaws that were removed from our hearing.""

tracks 2, 3, 4 and the first half of 7 are pretty much perfect pop songs in my view -- littered with hooks, personality and comprehensible, tangible emotion; yet the reviewer just picks out a random lyric from EBK -- of all the songs -- in an attempt to make it seem like this album is too esoteric, pretentious, insincere or something along those lines. klap's review got it right; "even when you can’t really understand what Barnes is saying, between the deranged yelps and those easily understood tidbits you can generally get the feeling that this is coming from a dark and deeply personal place"

it's just clear that the reviewer did not put much effort into listening to the album more than one or two times. and i'm willing to bet other critics were just as dismissive, and that the last few tracks just left a bad taste in their mouths, leading them to call the album a mess or 'exhausting' or whatever. they just seem to focus on that one aspect of the album and forget the rest of the album. and it's a shame, because there are people out there who probably think "oh this album probably isn't worth listening to (or revisiting)" because of p4k.

i definitely was not a fan of the experimental/noise at first and would have preferred another linear song like "Plaintiff" instead, but right now i don't mind them that much -- i don't think they stick out like a sore thumb or anything like that. i mostly used to (and still do) skip through those parts but listening to the album as a whole when you are in the right mood (which i am in a lot recently) is so good.
