this is for sure better than altars. only real complaint is that the production sucks ass.

I didn't think gateways' avg on the site was far off from what I thought my rating for it is, but formulas is def underrated imo

i think formulas has some cool ideas but its quite inconsistent and prob too long. heretic is even worse in that regard
gateways needs more love prob, esp from people who like gojira

Yeah I mean formulas isn't perfect. Those r probably the gripes id personally have with it: inconsistent and too long. Still a solid 4.0 for me

I re-check gateways periodically cuz I know there are users who rabidly defend that era/album and I never settle on it being more than pretty good

still these guys have been more consistently interesting than most dm bands, while also varying their sound on each record
and their 80s stuff is just nuts i meant cmon

"Covenant > Altars > Gateways > This > Formulas > Domination > Kingdoms > Heretic > Illud"
Man, I can't be the only one who just hated Kingdoms Disdained (yes I know my original review gave it a decent score, but opinions can change over time). As bad as Illud was, as least it was memorably bad. Hell, I still remember a lot of those awful moments a decade later, which has to count for something. But I've tried to listen to Kingdoms about 6 or 7 times now and I still can't hum a single riff from that thing. It just goes in one ear and out the other, and I think the positive reception at the time just came from people who were like, "well, it's not Illud at least!"

hmm
kingdoms is def not memorable by any means, but its a lot more competent in the moment than most dm
i dont think illud was thaaaat that bad tbh, there is much worse music with a 3+ avg on this site

I do agree with you to an extent. While I do still think a a lot of moments were cringy and ridiculous, it's not horrendous or anything. I'd probably have it at either a 2 or 2.5 (which is what I have it at now). As far as that year goes, it definitely wasn't as bad as Dedicated to Chaos or something like that

That reminds me, is good to see when Park actually likes things lol

@dave
i guess it depends what you like about gojira specifically, but a lot of their riffs on terra and on from mars remind me of that album. and you get a monstrous performance from pete behind the drums
@necrotica
its weird because i partially agree with you that its not really a good record or a true "return to form", but at the same time i think a lot of worse dm is more overrated (half of vader's discog, at least half of deicide's, etc etc)
|

ive tried but i was never able to get into anything past covenant tbh. gateways and formulas arent bad necessarily, i just didnt dig em.
domination straight up sucks tho.

It's crazy how wide-ranging the opinions are for that one. I hear plenty of people say it's one of the classic dm albums of that time, while other people seem to regard it as a huge disappointment compared to the first three. Haven't listened to it in ages though, so I'll have to come to my own conclusion on that one
