Perosnally I'd prefer to see them develop the sound on this album than do another album like Damnation but either way I'm pretty excited for the new album.

GR was pretty much another BWP for the most part

not really

In terms of song structure at least. I know the general sound was slightly different

GR progged harder than BWP did and wasn't nearly as generic

"I think that GR was actually more geared toward a commercial audience whereas Blackwater Park just
happened to be their major breakthrough"
BWP is just as accessible as GR imo. Both of them are pretty much the ideal album to start with.

should just go balls deep and start with MAYH or still life

GR is their most balanced album vocally.

Almost all of them are interchangeable.

Agreed.

Its only generic if compared to other Opeth albums. I cant think of any other band that has released an album that sounds remotely like BWP so in that sense it isnt generic.
|
| |
It just feels generic in comparison to albums like MAYH and GR, which have far more interesting and unique ideas imo.
