Okay, I think I understand... I'll download it before buying it.

I've heard you talk about Camel in the past as well, Kill. I'll go download something of theirs right now as well.

I find it hard to believe that anyone would seriously be taken aback or shocked by the stylistic shift on this album.

I mean it's not like they ever hid their influences.

Also, did anyone ever really listen to Opeth for the brutality or metal or whatever? Really?

In its own way, Heritage is the first piece of art of a series, watch out...

"have you even heard camel bro"

Yea. I actually have their album Mirage. Brilliant record. They are definitely an extremely underrated Prog Rock band. I know Mike is EXTREMELY influenced by them. I definitely love Progressive music in general. However, I don't like that Opeth has taken such a quick and drastic turn into a straight up Prog Rock band. Their Metal roots were eliminated with this album. While this is probably just an experimental album, I think this sound would be better suited for a side project. Like I said, this isn't the Opeth that has been churning out quality albums since the mid 90's. Nothing was wrong with their sound and I don't think they should have made such an extreme change, but, hey, at least its good, haha!

all I can say is that if you go into this album expecting anything close to what you've come to expect from opeth as far as sound is concerned, you're doing it wrong

I like how this is progressive rock. Sounds really good without all the growling.

Reminds me of Anekdoten or Anglagard.

They definitely never release the same record twice. There is no doubt about that. After all the news concerning this album, I pretty much knew how it would sound. Still....not exactly what I wanted.

^this is better than Blackwater Park. But then again, 39% of my music composition is progressive rock.

Haha! To each his own. I absolutely love Opeth's sound on Blackwater Park. The extensive and creative use of the Ebow throughout that album really was something awesome to me. I also am absolutely crazy about Still Life. To me, those albums displayed the true Opeth sound in my opinion. Everything since has continued to evolve, but its been a slow process....then this came out. Its certainly not bad, just a HUGE change of pace. There is definitely a lot of cool and creative stuff on this album, but nothing stood out to me like their classic stuff.

Next up, a Porcupine Tree album with complete set of growling vocals and wall-to-wall metal riffing. Can't wait...

Ok, I'm at 10 listens and still not convinced.

For me, regardless of music genre, the album must move me and show inspired music/lyric writing.

So far, I don't see much of either of these qualities. Bummer.

A couple of good-to-great songs, the rest sounds like an assemble of talented musicians playing cool music. I love Akerfeldt's "soft" vocals but they don't do much for me on this album. They sound thin and distant. Not much emotion.

What more do you need my friend?

Listened thoroughly to half of the record (the last 3 and the first two songs), this is atm a 3.5 for me, with good potential in evolving to be a 4.

Really cool music.

Anekdoten is a good call. I'd replace your anglagard by Sinkadus (A light kinda Anglagard). Also I can clearly detect tint of Landberk and Finisterre here (to name only modern prog).

This band is slightly above average. Their earlier works were better, and they peaked at Deliverance. Almost all of their albums are mastered horribly, with no dynamics or very little.
