Should be complement I think So arguably I should have spelt it right to begin with, but it frustrates me that Word's spell check didn't catch that shit.
There is a substantial controversy in your review Trey.
You can say that the band and record is great (rating and review-wise) and then say that the drummer is bland.
In rock, if the drummer is bland, the whole band is bland. I disagree. In most mainstream rock bands the drummer is bland. Most Doom albums have bland or at least uneventful drummers. Also, in a band as complex as DT, the drummer issue can be glossed over a little.

Most Doom albums have bland or at least uneventful drummers
In doom - and more specifically in funeral doom - this blandness in drumming is a prerequisite for the start.
In mainstream rock, diversity is not a prerequisite, true, but always comes in handy.
On the contrary, in DT and in prog rock/metal in general, lack of diversity, instrument-wise, is not a prerequisite.
The blandness of Labrie and Mangini - not that Petrucci and Rudess are doing anything extraordinary here - made me write my soundoff about Adult Oriented "progressive" Rock.
I couldn't find anything - a solo, a riff, a song - to grab myself from in here.
Sad but true (for me at least).
The band should break up, effective yesterday.

i blame Systematic Chaos for alluring immature fans
| | | maybe someone has said something to this degree already, but i can't believe no one went for a status along the lines of "Mike Portnoy is gone and Dream Theater is back! The silver lining: it doesn't suck"

what the hell why are there so many 5s on this
Those who five-d this, are most probably unaware of albums like Images and Words or Awake or even albums like Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Train of Thought.

For all you Mike Mangini apologists/defenders:
Once we were sure that we had a song idea down and a song beginning to end, what would happen in the studio is that John Petrucci would do the drum programs, we did this through a computer, so he would program the drums and then we would send that song to, completed with drums on there, via synthetic drummer, we would send to Mike Mangini and then he would take it from there. He would craft it into what he felt was necessary in the way that the drums would unfold on each and every song and that’s how the whole process is done.
By the time that Mike Mangini came into the studio to do his tracks he was very sure of where he wanted to go; that being said, too, him and John Petrucci were bouncing ideas throughout each and every song, trying new things or trying something that might even make it much more strong or powerful. So that’s kind of the way it came up but we did give Mike Mangini absolute freedom in the kind of drummer that he is, his style is very apparent; he’s very intuitive, he’s very musical. He’s proven himself over many years that he is world class and he is unique in the way that he plays drums, so we wanted to capture that, we didn’t want to suffocate any of those elements that make him truly a gem as a drummer. So, we did allow a lot of liberty from him as far as how he wanted to express himself.
That's right, bitches, I'm not editing shit ;)

"The band should break up, effective yesterday."-Voivod
The band should've broken up, effective before Octavarium was released. Six Degrees is one of my favorite albums of theirs but already sounds pretty phoned-in (to me it mainly showcases Rudess' desire to write early 90's Mega Drive/Snes games music instead, which is partly what makes it interesting in spite of everything) and Train of Thought would've been a disaster were it not for the heavier hand and Honor TF/Stream oC. Whatever came next, this included, is so nonchalant it makes me feel for the band's fiercely loyal following.
The decision to forego options such as "hammer" Lang or "crazy" Minneman (fuck, even Donati!) in favor of "robo" Mangini (not to mention the whole annoying little reality tv/documentary thingy) says a lot about where they are right now, which is a comfort zone of little to no relevance.
"Dream Theater anno 2011", more like Adult Contemporary Prog Metal.

No, no, no, no.... Octavarium and Black Clouds and Silver Linings were worthy of release. Both are very solid albums. I would have been okay if Systematic Chaos had not been released though, it pretty much catered to Hot Topic junkies with it's vampire shit.

I just bought the album its amazing so far
| | | Given the attention that this band was getting after the whole booting of Portnoy etc, this is a very safe release for them
| | | IMO the vocalist sucks. He really does sound like a vampire... that's the exact reason i can't really stand DT
