Baseline is obviously your stereotypical metalhead. Don't try to reason with him.

Yeah, sarcasm obviously. :P
Anyhow, I do like the original versions of the songs, but I think it's a bit unfair to criticize the new versions for being so different, because after all, that's what the band was going for.
If they had released new versions being pretty much the same sound but some added strings, there wouldn't have been much of a difference, and that's noticeable on a few songs on Hindsight for example.
Anyhow, can't wait for news about a new EP or a new album, can't wait another 7 years for the next studio-album. :/

Guess what? I have three Tool albums as 5.0 because they are 5.0s.
Anyways, this shit is even worse than Katatonia and My Dying Bride. Cheesiness all over the place, I hope theneedledrop reviews this and rate it 3/10.
oh cool, you're one of those people that genuinely thinks some guy's opinion validates your own! you're a silly billy. :]

^ And that's exactly why about 80% of my metal albums are rated under 2.5! A self-hating metalhead. Those are the worst kind. Do you cut yourself?
Anyhow, I do like the original versions of the songs, but I think it's a bit unfair to criticize the new versions for being so different, because after all, that's what the band was going for. They're not being criticized for being different. They're being criticized for being lazy. They couldn't even re-do entire songs, for the most part. It's not hard to take one melody from an old song and stretch it for a few minutes. Plus all of the orchestral stuff was written/done by someone outside of the band. So really, how much of this did they even really work on?
If they had released new versions being pretty much the same sound but some added strings, there wouldn't have been much of a difference, and that's noticeable on a few songs on Hindsight for example.
That's the thing, though. These were all doom songs before with death metal vocals. The mere act of making these songs emulate their current sound would have made them noticably different (like the first two tracks, for example).

So you're saying that you don't know how to metal? Now your comments make sense lol.
These were all doom songs before with death metal vocals.
Omg Willie the genre is called death/doom -.-

What's your point?
I just find it annoying that people keep saying doom metal with death vocals instead of using the name of the genre :]
sorry for nitpicking :[

Well, I get the point of the band being lazy, but couldn't the same be said for Hindsight then? And as far as I remember, that album was pretty well received.
I think the good thing about Falling Deeper, is that for many new Anathema fans, there won't be a single song on this that they are already familiar with. (maybe Alone, Sunset of Age and MAAAAYBE Sleep In Sanity depending on if they dared to check out Serenades), but let's face it, the Crestfallen and Pentecost songs are pretty rare, it's not really the first thing that new fans check out. :P
So all in all, good way for fans to hear these old songs, I had heard them before, but this album created new interest for the songs, and I'll go back and check out the originals for sure.

I just find it annoying that people keep saying doom metal with death vocals instead of using the name of the genre :] I know what the genre is, but that wasn't what I was going for with that comment. I was trying to describe that the difference between their past and current sound and why moving from the old to the new would have been a big change.
Well, I get the point of the band being lazy, but couldn't the same be said for Hindsight then? No, because if you listen to that album you'll hear that they didn't just shit out an acoustic version of each track. They changed/added melodies and instrumentation as well. They didn't just rehash the originals like they did this time.
I think the good thing about Falling Deeper, is that for many new Anathema fans, there won't be a single song on this that they are already familiar with. That is true and we've already established that it seems like that group appreciates this more, but I started with Serenades/Crestfallen and I wrote the review ;)

No, not really, I believe there are alot of people who genuinely think some guy's opinion validates their own. That's why I want someone popular to convince them they don't need to waste their time or money on this.
This gets only a 4.5 from me.
you essentially just said "no not really" and then just said exactly what I said, silly :]

Willie @ I get where you are coming from. If I had known Anathema from Serenades, or at least started in that end, I might have felt the same. :P

It's not like I hate their new stuff because I started on them back when they only had Serenades. I wrote the default reviews for Hindsight and We're Here Because We're Here and they're both positive.

You're full of witty comebacks for these guys; aren't you ;)
|

It's supposed to be re-creations of those older songs, the same way Hindsight was.
you could try listening to it on face value, rather than on what it is 'supposed' to be

On face value, it's an album mostly made up of simple instrumentals that don't really go anywhere.
