or more specifically "this kind of party trash doesn't try to be deep"

sure that's fine but it tries to be universal and fun

which this isn't.

Like I love Ssion because they're brazenly shallow and acknowledge it and their music is fantastically entertaining as a result

but an exciting level of horrible would be a redeeming quality
which would grant the album a higher score
and i don't know why you say this isn't that horrible you bash it pretty hard in the review

and "I would argue that saying "pop music doesn't try to be 'deep'" is an intellectual copout"... I mean I agree I guess

point is: i think i listen to and enjoy a heavy amount of pop music (as in mindless entertainment pop music not just 'pop' if that makes sense), especially compared to sputnikkers in general, but i would never apply some of the same critiques that i apply to other music to that and it just irks me when others do

that could very well just be me though

see considering that I am almost fundamentally against the idea that pop and other types of music have to experience a different level of critical analysis, I think it's clear that we disagree

because in my view to DENY pop analysis is to deny it significance. from a cultural standpoint we need to analyze why things are successful more than ever, as the music industry crumbles from the inside out.

i see pop music as a purely social thing though
and because friends and i don't ever really comment on the pop music
(and especially not the way in which music is approached on a site like this one)
i listen to pop music lots but never really apply a critique to it
i just think it would be weird to
a) be listening to lmfao at a party and begin a conversation (or even begin thinking) about it in a critical sense
and b) to sit down and listen to the album as a whole, alone, in the same you would any other type of more personal music

that strikes me as lazy, and the reason why trash like the new john maus album gets critical acclaim... it masquerades as being more "personal"

(that was a very random point of comparison, of course)

What I mean is that I understand that different environments demand different approaches to listening. But the music itself is the same. Do we consider the intended environment when judging work? Sure. But we're still talking about the same product.

i understand that now i just think that because of the type of product it is (mindless pop music-- of which there is actually a ton of enjoyable tracks, I think) there's not really an ideal way to begin analyzing it fairly (see: ex.s a) and b) of my last post)

I understand what you mean. But just because it's odd to listen to the album out of context doesn't necessarily make it wrong or particularly susceptible to critical fallacies

you're right... sorry, i wasn't trying to insinuate that what you were doing by criticizing this was wrong, it just struck me as odd. i understand a little better now even if i still think it's a bit off haha

yeah if you're excluding pop music from your "general musical parameters" Eric because, seemingly you find it more disposable, I would say you're approaching the "genre" in way that makes pop more taxing.

This album is junky because there are artists that have a similar ethos and musical aesthetic that produce work so much better than this (I mean I'd take most club-hop over this shit).

You can enjoy a shitty record but enjoyment does not inherently mean a great record.

Deviant.

Just because the music might be constructed differently with respect to what it might be trying to achieve, or the fact that it might simply just be attempting to appeal to the lowest common denominator doesn't mean that it shouldn't enjoy the same level of scrutiny as something more, idk "high brow", I guess
