It's a good album. Have been a huge fan of Cold since the first album, just a little past the Grundig era, I was in middle school when the first one was released and I fully enjoyed but never understood the actual content or meaning, just loved the music. Took a while to finally mature and fully enjoy the whole blend of great and emotionally charged music and lyrical contents.
What I noticed between all the albums is that the first two were sad AND somewhat angry. The anger factor wasn't a big deal by itself. It's that amazing mixture that feels like going through hardships but with a hardened heart, you can hear it in the music and lyrics. During the year of the spider, the "maturity" they supposedly gained was really just a step towards a different direction. It meant more depression but at the cost of that edge the first two had. The perfect balance is gone so the band doesn't feel as charged as it did before.
Listen to Sam McCandless's drumming. It's like a really angry girl wanting to destroy shit but is wrapped in a straight jacket, inside a padded room. She can bang her head and stuff against the walls but she's not fully unleashed. Seriously, listen to "The Switch" than listen to any of the newer stuff. His stuff fits perfectly to the old format.

Not sure what all the hate is about with A Different Kind of Pain. "Anatomy of a Tidal Wave" and "Another Pill" are pretty epic IMO...ahh well.
Superfiction does nothing for me, because the band went away from that bigger than life sound that I enjoyed so much from Year of the Spider and A Different Kind of Pain.

this isn't that bad, there's enough here for it to be enjoyable, it's not year of the spider or 13 ways, certainly misses the harder puch those had. but it's alright.
